Set on a hillside overlooking orchards ,this must be the ideal way to vist Addo ,a short 20 minute drive away.
The room was among the best we have stayed in with a large veranda and even an outside shower.
The food and service were excellent, as was Archie-a real character-and his team.

They helped make my wife's birthday memorable with a song and champagne for breakfast!

This place is magic...

The location: on top of a mountain, overlooking a green valley full of citrus orchards.

The accommodation: we were in Superior family chalet # 1, beautifully decorated, spacious, a huge bathroom with a magnificent view, and a lovely outside shower.

The staff: Warm and very welcoming. Each and every staff member treated us like good old friends, including wonderful Archie, who owns and runs this awesome lodge.

The food: Delicious. Not a huge offering which is understandable due to the remote location of the lodge, but absolutely wonderful and perfectly presented.

The service: Everything was taken care of. No need to arrange things, everything is arranged for you. All with a genuine smile!

Our stay at the Hitgeheim was truly memorable. This was our first trip to wonderful South Africa, and due to the limited amount of time we had our program was full, maybe too full. At the Hitgeheim we finally found the time to relax and unwind, although our stay of two nights was way too short... We will return!

This was my second visit and I returned because the first visit was special. I am pleased to say it was as special as before. It is like being in an aerie of your own. Why? Because the owners continue to be personally involved in every detail. They chose a kopje on their property that has beautiful views over the agricultural land below them. Then they built, with their own direct involvement, several suites that are essentially separate and very private little homes. The lodge building is very comfortable and they encourage you to gather there for predinner cocktails to watch the sunset over this special part of the Addo area. They will mingle with the guests at this time and you can't help but feel you are part of their family.
Each home/suite is individually furnished and shows the personal involvement of Archie and Marietjie. Taking a shower or bath is a pure delight plus if you do it outdoors you may be visited by non dangerous wildlife. Relaxing on the porch/deck with a book or binoculars is also sheer pleasure. And as for getting up out of those magnificent kingdoms of sleep, if it wasn't for the call of the fantastic breakfast in bed or the restaurant you might be tempted to sleep all day.
Though it may be hard to tear yourself away going to dinner in Marietjie's new restaurant is an absolute delight. The food is well presented and mouthwatering to the taste. Couple that with excellent service, beautiful setting and views and you might want to linger all night if an after dinner aperatif and once again good company in the lodge weren't calling. If you are so inclined ask Archie about his private wine cellar. However Marietjie's wine selection in the restaurant is more than adequate.
Though you are not in Addo park Archie specializes in knowing the best tours to take, including the ones he personally runs from the lodge. Believe me, there isn't a tour operator he doesn't know personally because he is a very outgoing chap. So you can feel comfortable placing yourself in his hands.
Staying outside the park also opens up the possibility of tours to different parks in the area as well as other attractions. Archie loves to explore those possibilities with you. The only caution is that if it involves a flight from Archie's airstrip, the plane has to come from elsewhere and the weather there may prevent it's takeing off.
The staff are excellent, personally supervised by Marietjie and in fact several were still there after 5 years.
The crowning touch is the washing of your car the morning of your departure. Automobile is probably the best way to get here although airplane and other arrangements can be made by Archie.

Room Tip: Tell Archie or Marietjie your taste and leave it to them. However they are all magnificent

My wife and I have been visiting Archie and Marietje for years now and it only gets better. The lodges have all the comforts and grace of 5-star accomodations and the food is equally terrific. The beautiful Sunday River Valley runs just below the lodge and make for a totally relaxed environment. With Addo Park just accross the valley and Port Elizabeth 50 minutes away, there's never a shortage of things to do...unless you want to just put your feet up and watch the world go by. This last trip was probably a benchmark for us because we flew our Cessna up to introduce some good friends who will certainly join us in the future for a weekend at the lodge. Drive or fly your own plane, you'll find a warm welcome from two grand hosts.

This was our second stay at this wonderful gem in the past three years. Our hosts went out of their way to make us feel like family, and we cannot wait to return, In sum,a superior property, that brings lasting memories. For those who wish to experience Addo Elephant Park, there is no alternative to this amazingly beautiful resort. The food is first class, the rooms romantic , the staff attentive, and the location perfect.

It was a bit of a gamble for us, choosing to hold our wedding ceremony and reception (for 30 people) at Hitgeheim. Based in the UK , the only knowledge of the venue we had came from the excellent Trip Advisor reviews, and Archie – the owner’s – excellent communication with us throughout the process.

Unlike some venues we approached, Archie answered every query within 24 hours (often within minutes!) which really helped put my mind at ease as he patiently answered query after query about food, accommodation, dancing and so on.

To cut a long story short, we were massively impressed by Hitgeheim. We stayed for two nights (the night before the wedding, plus the wedding night) and the food was exceptional. Five-course dinners are standard at Hitgeheim – and by UK standards, are very reasonable at about £30 per head. Presentation was impeccable. Breakfast the next morning was divine; a beautifully-presented platter of fruit, toast and jams, plus a choice of cooked breakfast. (I highly recommend The Kingfisher – a scrambled egg, cream cheese and smoked salmon croissant with caviar – heaven on a plate.)

The staff were fantastic – super-attentive without being obtrusive. Little things really added the extra sparkle; on the day we checked out, someone had washed our car.

The wedding day was amazing. We had a major hiccup with the flowers, which had been ordered from a local florist and had turned up looking brown and wilted. Within an hour, Archie’s staff had created an entirely new bridal bouquet, plus buttonholes for the men, at no extra charge to us – truly saving the day. Everyone has commented on how beautiful the proteas bouquet looked.

The views from Hitgeheim are stunning – you can literally see for miles. The breathtaking view was the perfect backdrop to our day and created some fantastic photos.

The rooms aren’t cheap, but as you would expect, are stunning inside. We had a large four-poster bed, with a separate bathroom, almost as big as our living room at home! The bathroom had a big claw-footed bath, a separate shower, and also an outdoor shower, overlooking the bush. My new husband was concerned about the potential negative effects of combining open-air showering with the local bee population, but no such problems took place!

Loads of wildlife around the lodge; driving up the rough road to Hitgeheim we saw several types of buck and one of our guests saw a zebra. We also had an uninvited guest during the reception – a large wolf spider! I understand it was harmless, though it did cause some hilarious screaming amongst guests, before the staff relocated it outside! During the night, we heard wild owls.

After the reception, we turned the boma into a dancefloor and guests had a great time dancing… before relocating to the swimming pool for a pool party.

Throughout the entire process – from organisation to execution, Archie and his wife were fantastic at planning, and accommodating our wishes. We made some fairly last-minute changes (guest numbers, floral arrangements, evening snacks, table layout) and at no point did we feel that we had inconvenienced them – they took everything in their stride.

The final thing I was worried about was the final bill – aware that some places will take advantage as soon as they hear the word “wedding”, I was concerned we’d bit hit by hidden extras. We needn’t have worried; the bill was exactly what we’d discussed – and the cost came in at about 30% of what we would have paid for a similar quality wedding in the UK (excluding flights etc.).

The day after the wedding, Archie arranged for a guide – Peter - to take the wedding party on a safari to Addo; Peter was an exceptional guide, and the day out at Addo was a memorable way for our wedding guests to round off their trip.

To anyone considering Hitgeheim as their wedding venue – I genuinely don’t think we could have found a better spot.

We came out for a family wedding in the Cape, and it took a lot of persuasion to get my wife, Lorraine, to accompany me on the long flight from New York. Fortunately, Hitgeheim and the game viewing did not disappoint. Actually, it turned out to be the highlight of the trip, which also included Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, Cape Town, and Tulbach.

We landed at Port Elizabeth after a 20-hour trip and reached Hitgeheim by rental car within a few hours. Lorraine was especially pleased with the extra large suite. After a 12-hour sleep we were ready for Addo and the elephants. The next day we did Schotia and saw all of the other animals one would want to see -- lion, rhino, hippo, giraffe, antelope, warthog, etc. Peter, our guide for the game viewing on both days, was just great with his knowledge of the animals and the area.

Our hosts, Archie and his wife, Marietjie (if I have the spelling right) were very pleasant and helpful. We very much enjoyed the view of the Sundays River valley from our suite, plus the opportunity to get some exercise walking around the rocky ridge on which the lodge is located.
