We visited Orange backpackers next door and found this little restaurant. The owner said he had taken over only three weeks before. I had delicious bread as a starter, Kudu as a main and a nice cape cake at the end. Service was good and was done by a German girl and the owner. On the menu were pizzas and all sorts of venison.

I want to keep Hazel and Randy all to myself, but I alone cannot sustain this restaurant. Joanne L and I ate there 5 times in 3 days because it was that good. You know the salad is fresh when you see Hazel walk out to the garden to pick it minutes before it ends up on the table. I don't know what secret ingredients she puts in that salad dressing, but it's addicting.

Randy kept us entertained with his stories and knowledge on permaculture. All of our quick lunches turned into 3 hour hangouts.

So go, eat everything (salad, kudu steak, thai curry, wraps, pizza, burgers, chips, dessert and even the garnishes) and tell them that the girls from New York sent you.

My friend and I were in Addo for two days on a recent trip to South Africa and were looking for a legitimate meal outside of the touristy game reserve when we stumbled upon Hazel's for lunch. We ended up eating every meal here for the rest of our stay and by the end had ordered everything on the menu at least once. While Hazel's food was delcious enough to keep us coming back time and again (she's able to make something as simple as a garden salad addictive), it was Randy's knack for hosting and passion for permaculture that kept us lingering there hours after the meal was done.

Hazel's is a great place to relax, eat great food and meet interesting people. Must try the fresh picked salads, kudu steak and brandy cake for dessert,

During our stay in the Addo (Hostel: Orange Elephant Backpackers) we went to Hazel's Organic Country Kitchen, which was recommended by our host.
The food was great, the staff really friendly (told a lot of interesting storys), the atmosphere lovely. All in all it was a cool place to be and a nice experience, so definitely a must stop before the Addo Elephant National Park. Furthermore all the food is organic and out of their own plantage/cultivation. It is recommendable to 100 percent! Cheers

My hubby and I stopped in here on the recommendation of the landlord of one of the local b&bs. We were treated to a very good welcome from both Randy and Hazel, a lovely couple who are passionate about South Africa (despite being Canadian), and about living and indeed running a business in a sustainable manner as well as putting something back into the community where they live. All of the vegetables served in the restaurant are grown on site and picked just before cooking, and all of the meat is sourced locally - what carbon footprint!? Everything is home-made to order and so can be adapted to any allergies or requrements.

We had a lovely evening, chatting with everyone in the bar, and eating the wonderful food. We went for the bobotjie (an SA speciality minced beef dish) on Randy's recommendation and were certainly not disappointed. The only slight 'difficulty' was not being able to finish as the portions were very generous, although this was easily solved by taking the left-overs with us for lunch the next day when it was equally tasty.

If you stay in or near Addo, this is a must!

We wish this new venture all the best as they grow.

Fliss & Aron.
