“Outstanding!”

My friend and I were in Addo for two days on a recent trip to South Africa and were looking for a legitimate meal outside of the touristy game reserve when we stumbled upon Hazel's for lunch. We ended up eating every meal here for the rest of our stay and by the end had ordered everything on the menu at least once. While Hazel's food was delcious enough to keep us coming back time and again (she's able to make something as simple as a garden salad addictive), it was Randy's knack for hosting and passion for permaculture that kept us lingering there hours after the meal was done.

Hazel's is a great place to relax, eat great food and meet interesting people. Must try the fresh picked salads, kudu steak and brandy cake for dessert,

“Awesome!”

During our stay in the Addo (Hostel: Orange Elephant Backpackers) we went to Hazel's Organic Country Kitchen, which was recommended by our host.
The food was great, the staff really friendly (told a lot of interesting storys), the atmosphere lovely. All in all it was a cool place to be and a nice experience, so definitely a must stop before the Addo Elephant National Park. Furthermore all the food is organic and out of their own plantage/cultivation. It is recommendable to 100 percent! Cheers

“Good food, perfect welcome!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 23, 2012

My hubby and I stopped in here on the recommendation of the landlord of one of the local b&bs. We were treated to a very good welcome from both Randy and Hazel, a lovely couple who are passionate about South Africa (despite being Canadian), and about living and indeed running a business in a sustainable manner as well as putting something back into the community where they live. All of the vegetables served in the restaurant are grown on site and picked just before cooking, and all of the meat is sourced locally - what carbon footprint!? Everything is home-made to order and so can be adapted to any allergies or requrements.

We had a lovely evening, chatting with everyone in the bar, and eating the wonderful food. We went for the bobotjie (an SA speciality minced beef dish) on Randy's recommendation and were certainly not disappointed. The only slight 'difficulty' was not being able to finish as the portions were very generous, although this was easily solved by taking the left-overs with us for lunch the next day when it was equally tasty.

If you stay in or near Addo, this is a must!

We wish this new venture all the best as they grow.

Fliss & Aron.

“Travellers dream”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2012 via mobile

Randy's beers along with Hazel's cooking, wow what an experience! This little restaurant has only been going for a few months now and already they are streaks ahead of the opposition. The service was excellent, so warm and friendly. The food was amazing, we had the kudu steak with veggies, their signature dish, everyone has to try this. They have free wifi so for the backpacker/traveller it ticks all the boxes! Still need to experience one of their big BBQ evenings, but we will be back! Randy put those beers in the fridge, Hazel get that apron on,we're on our way!!

“relaxed atmosphere, great food!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 20, 2012

We went to Addo last weekend, and stayed at Orange Elephant backpackers. Hazel's Organic Country Kitchen is just next to it, so we decided to go there for some drinks and diner. Once there, the male owner welcomed us, and explained the menu to us. We originally expected to get pizza, but as Hazel and her husband just recently took over the restaurant, dishes were added. The owner recommended the Kudu dish, with a starter of bread and humus. We decided to go for it, and were not sorry. It was really great. The starter, the bread with humus, was absolutely fresh, and the bread was so tasty! Then the main course, the kudu, was greatly cooked, with some butternut mashed and vegetables on the side.
We finished our meal with some sort of pudding with icecream, which was also very very delicious. The price was, for backpackers, very acceptable. If I recall, we paid 270 Rand (27 euro) for the whole three courses for two people, and 4 drinks. I would definitely recommend this Restaurant. Oh, and by the way, all there products are organic and from the area. They have their own veggie garden, and the meat comes from the area as well.
