My husband and I enjoyed 3nights at Camp Figtree. The location is absolutely wonderful. The staff are very willing and kind but we feel that the place lacks a woman's touch. All the staff apart from the bedroom and kitchen staff are male.
Mike the manager was very informative when taking us on the game drive and Simba was also very informative when he took us on the guided nature walk.

Room Tip: We had room 7which looked like it was the best room. The views were magic.

We really enjoyed staying: amazing location (truly at the end of the world), colonial feel, nice touches, the staff is super friendly.
The dinner was really good, as the was the breakfast.
We will be back.

If you like soulless white walled hotels exactly the same the world over with no sense of history of feeling then you most definitely shouldn't come here ( to be honest you shouldn't really leave the house!)
Camp Figtree is much more than a place to stay, it is breathtaking. We only stayed for one night which was a huge mistake, I could have sat on our verandah overlooking the mountains for days and not got bored of the view. We had the most spectacular rain during our stay which simply added to the fun, watching the mists clear across the mountains and valleys. For those who say this place needs a little more organisation or polishing you clearly haven't understood what this place is all about. This is not a Hilton, this is is not a Holiday Inn, this is a one and only place and I am so pleased to have been lucky enough to stay here To Richard , Michael and the team thank you so much for your hospitality and sense of humour ( even during the downpours!) we will never forget camp figtree.

We were at Camp Figtree for 2 nights and had absolutely the best experience! The views were amazing, as were rooms and the food! Loved the dinner outside around an open fire... Apart from that, the people at Camp Figtree each were all so friendly and really make it a perfect stay. We did not do a safari with Camp Figtree, but did do a walk with Simba when we had a coupsle of hours spare time. He told us a lot about the history and life and vegatation around the Camp and Addo. Did the Addo safari by ourselves, and Schotia the next day. Very different, and if you like to see the 'real thing', choose Addo overe Schotia.

Would definitely love to go back!

We stayed there for two nights at the end of February 2014. There is something amazing about this place, the atmosphere, the view,... We had a spacious room (#5), with a big bathroom (and a separate toilet!) A nice pool with a relaxing view over the peaceful valley, very nice cooking from the chef in the advertised colonial atmosphere. An ideal setting to retreat for a few days and it has all elements to have a great experience!

However, we also discovered some letdowns during our stay, that made us feel less comfortable. Tablecloths with stains from the previous days (weeks?) in the restaurant give a dirty impression. Same for the pillows on the chairs in the restaurant and on the porch. Hot water in the shower that alternates between hot and ice-cold every other minute, takes away the relaxing feeling of a shower. We could not help noticing that the place lacked a bit of initiative! Giving it a 'modest' makeover would definitely help to give the place the appearance fitting to its standing. Eg. Clean all pillows and chairs (especially those outside) to give it a fresh odour, make sure that tablecloths are clean, think about a clean floor cover, make sure all items that are a bit loose or broken are repaired (toilet seat for example), add some air refreshers, be proactive towards and be present for the guests (don't let them come look for you), add visible room numbers on the walkway for the first day, add a bit of paint here and there to give it a less neglected appearance and look into the hot water issue (if I take a look at some other reviews, this seems to be one of the 'hot' items)...
Concerning the staff, all were very friendly when encountered! However, looking around for one of them should be avoided at all times. We got hot water for coffee/tea delivered both mornings and the room was nicely rearranged by the cleaning party. Cleaning the bathroom with a wet mop however, is recommended, especially since the shower did not have sides to keep it all dry. After a nice game drive, we were told that we would be back by lunch time around 1330-1400. Upon arrival, we requested if we could still have a light lunch. Very nice wraps were offered with chicken or beef. However, this took quite some time before we could finally still our hunger after a long morning. As a suggestion, offering some sandwiches as lunch would have satisfied or maybe, a short communication between the ranger and the kitchen upon departure at Addo NP could shorten this time for the hungry ones.

In general, we could not get rid of the feeling that although all elements for a superb stay are there, the place and staff lacked some organisation! The suggestions written above might not be the perfect solution, since we only see the superficial organisation, but at least give an idea on the small scale of issues that add up and could be avoided with little effort. As mentioned in one of the other reviews, a host available for the guests to keep it all together could help to get rid of these superfluous downsides. We felt that at some times, one person had to do everything, from doing the bar, check-outs, host, restaurant, cleaning up,... That takes time...even though we were on holiday! Is the staff undermanned or does it lack overview/organisation?

To the staff: keep it up, because this site, with this chef and your friendly potential has it all: an amazing valley for bird enthusiasts, nice game drives in nearby Addo with experienced and vivid ranger, the melancholic atmosphere under the porch with a drink at sundown... Make this jewel on top of the mountain shine (again)!

The room was great, views superb and the staff very helpful. This is one of the nicest places we have ever stayed at and we travel a lot! The food was excellent. Recommend Addo but not Schotia which is a bit like an open air zoo.

A real gem of a place with wonderful views, friendly and helpful staff, fabulous rooms. Was travelling with my mother of 82 and we just wished we had more than two nights as we so loved it. We visited Addo park in their open landrover which was so much better than driving oneself around the park.
