We needed somewhere to stay near Port Elizabeth during the World Cup and everywhere in the town was very expensive. We found Avoca River Cabins, it's definitely out in the countryside but the cabins are nice. You couldn't stay there without a car or some kind of transport and there are no shops close by. But it's scenic and different and very reasonable rates.

We visited the Addo area primarily to visit the Addo Elephant National Park. Avoca, located about 15 minutes drive from the park entrance makes a perfect location between the town of Kirkwood and the park. Full self catering facilities allow you to do a nice braai (BBQ) and there are also locally available restaurants. We stayed in one of the riverside tree house style facilities and I would recommend them to anyone. These facilities could hold a small family and are great value for money, clean and very comfortable. The deck patios make an excellent spot to enjoy a meal or just relax, read and take in the sounds of the river valley. There's access to the Sundays river with kayaks available for use. The manager, Riaan, was very helpful with helping us get acquainted with the area and helping us to setup game drives into Scotia private game reserve (also highly recommended).

We stayed here for two nights on our Cape to Addo tour. It was fantastic, we felt we were part of a movie. Absolutely beautiful area and close to Addo National Park. Our dinners there were delicious, deserts not to be missed. The staff were very helpfull and our cottage was four stars at least. This is a great place for a romantic getaway. Thanks for having us.

We stayed three nights at Avoca in one of their very comfortable cottages overlooking the river. It was very well appointed with a large balcony, inside and outside shower, small kitchenette for self-catering and fan for those warm nights. We chose to have breakfast and for the small extra cost it was more than worth it, being served on the veranda of the main house amongst a beautiful garden and with distant views.

There is a wide choice of accommodation on this working citrus farm including traditional huts and clusters of cabins with shared facilities (ideal for a group).
There is use of a lovely swimming pool in the garden of the main house and an adventure play area for kids - as well as free canoes and a gorgeous swimming spot in the river with a deep wide pool and a raft.

The wildlife in the area of the farm is plentiful. Colourful birds everywere, abundant Dassies and the wonderful sight of a Goliath Heron fishing in the river below us. There is plenty to do in the area including eating at the nearby Lookout Restaurant (amazing views!) a nearby deli for delicious take-aways (behind which is the Reptile and Raptor centre - run by a pair of real enthusiasts) and the Schotia and Addo Reserves, which the hosts can book you in to in advance if you wish. We would particularly recommend the whole day experience run by Schotia, which includes pick-ups, four game drives (including one in Addo) lunch, tea and a slap-up meal with unlimited drinks in a bush camp at night.

What adds the icing to the cake at Avoca are hosts Dave and Judy Smith. They are a lovely couple, so welcoming and helpful. They can't do enough for you and you get the impression they actually enjoy having you as guests. Avoca offers a great experience and outstanding value for money. Very highly recommended - in fact we are going there again next time we are in South Africa.

This place has a range of accommodation from treehouses to mudhuts - but more luxurious than perhaps it sounds! It's in the grounds of a citrus farm, with lovely views and a small river running through the property (on which you can make use of their free canoes)
We stayed in the treehouse which was homely and well-equipped for self-catering. The owners were very welcoming and serve a mean breakfast on the veranda of their lovely house. Highly reccommended for a few days of solitude, or as a base for Addo elephant park 25km up the road.
