We stayed three nights at Avoca in one of their very comfortable cottages overlooking the river. It was very well appointed with a large balcony, inside and outside shower, small kitchenette for self-catering and fan for those warm nights. We chose to have breakfast and for the small extra cost it was more than worth it, being served on the veranda of the main house amongst a beautiful garden and with distant views.
There is a wide choice of accommodation on this working citrus farm including traditional huts and clusters of cabins with shared facilities (ideal for a group).
There is use of a lovely swimming pool in the garden of the main house and an adventure play area for kids - as well as free canoes and a gorgeous swimming spot in the river with a deep wide pool and a raft.
The wildlife in the area of the farm is plentiful. Colourful birds everywere, abundant Dassies and the wonderful sight of a Goliath Heron fishing in the river below us. There is plenty to do in the area including eating at the nearby Lookout Restaurant (amazing views!) a nearby deli for delicious take-aways (behind which is the Reptile and Raptor centre - run by a pair of real enthusiasts) and the Schotia and Addo Reserves, which the hosts can book you in to in advance if you wish. We would particularly recommend the whole day experience run by Schotia, which includes pick-ups, four game drives (including one in Addo) lunch, tea and a slap-up meal with unlimited drinks in a bush camp at night.
What adds the icing to the cake at Avoca are hosts Dave and Judy Smith. They are a lovely couple, so welcoming and helpful. They can't do enough for you and you get the impression they actually enjoy having you as guests. Avoca offers a great experience and outstanding value for money. Very highly recommended - in fact we are going there again next time we are in South Africa.
