“Staying in TryAll club”
Reviewed August 30, 2006

We just got back from a trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica. We were a group of 9 and rented out a Villa in Tryall club. It was called Karma Bay, and was fully staffed with cook, butler, gardener and on the beach. We would highly reccoment the Villa was families and large groups.

The weather for the most part was excellent. In the entire week we had 3 days of thunderstorms that lasted for a couple of hours in the afternoon, but the weather was still warm and clear.

We did a few day trips to Negril, Dunn River Water falls in Orchois. The beaches are awesome - warm and shallow and it was safe to leave the kids to wade around.

We just spent a wonderful week at Tryall in Jamaica. There were six of us - four adults and two toddlers staying in the three-bedroom Pinnacle villa. The Tryall website doesn't do this villa justice. The villa has been updated recently, and is top-notch throughout. The staff is very nice and did a great job. They worked hard to accommodate any wishes that we or our two little ones might have. Special notice to Beverly and Rose, the two main staff members, who kept the home running smoothly and provided tasty meals and snacks for all.

Resort seemed deserted - What is amazing about Tryall is that while the "resort" was ~60% occupancy, it seemed deserted. Combining this with the villa experience means that you can really relax and get away from everything.

Golf - Could not believe that only 15 people or so were playing per DAY. As a result, it was very easy to walk-up and get out at any point during the day. It’s a challenging, but fair course in good condition. I would definitely rate it higher than Half Moon (played many times over the last ten years), and almost on par with the terribly punitive White Witch. I played 6x during the week and wanted to stick-around for more. Our caddies were "Brown" and "Devon", both blessed with a good sense of humor and patience for our strict adherence to "army golf" (left-right-left-right...). In addition, the staff in the pro shop as well as the caddie master were very nice folks and took great care of us.

Linda Smith – Definitely consider using Linda and her team. They just made the entire process so much easier. Their site [---] is wonderful and provides great insight into the villa vacation. I spent far too much of their time on the phone asking many questions about the resort and our villa in particular – they did a great job making us feel comfortable that this vacation was right for us.

Nanny service - This is available and very inexpensive (~$4.50/hr). We requested two "swim nannies" to help with the twins (3 yr. olds) while we were on the golf course in the morning. They were very nice and the kids loved them. They often went to the Kids Club, the main resort pool as well as the beach.

One concern – Unlike Half Moon, which we visited a number of times, the golf course is a bit lax on the security (the remainder of the resort has top notch security at all times – we never ever felt concern for our safety at any time of day). At HM, no one ever approached us to sell us golf balls or random wood products (fish, bowls, dogs, cats, signs…). At Tryall, random people on the course would try to sell us balls at least five times per round. I didn’t really have a problem with these folks – they were nice and not terribly aggressive and would listen to a “I don’t need any more balls…thank you”. Let’s be clear, I did not need any balls, but we still bought 1-2 dozen per round for “respect”. The real problem was the guys selling wood products at the tee box of the seventh hole (in the shadow of the waterwheel). Once again, out of “respect”, we purchased 7-8 products in the first two days that we did not need, but bought to support the local folks. We thought that that would do it for the week. Instead, new guys showed-up every day and aggressively pushed the product – they really tried to intimidate us and made us fear in some small way for our safety (at times we had 1-2 women in our group). This just should not happen on vacation. We complained to the our caddies and the caddie master – it stopped for one day…but then quickly started-up again the next day. I really don’t want to blow this out of proportion, because EVERYTHING else on the vacation was just great.

In summary, we will definitely be back to Tryall and Pinnacle next year and for many to come.

The Roundhouse is a great place to relax. We were there in February and we will return in late May. The view is wonderful and with 7 bedrooms, all air conditioned, it easily accomodates 14 people. The staff has been there a good while and do all possible to make every visit memorable. Delroy, Marcie, Maureen, Calvin, Earl and Beverly become a part of your family and it is difficult to say goodbye. We've stayed at the Roundhouse many times over the years and it is always predictably wonderful.

We stayed at the Seafore Villa, one of the smaller ones, but it accomodated the six of us (4 adults, 2 children) wonderfully. The staff of 5, led by Naomi the cook, was first rate. Everything is effortless - meals cooked to your liking, house and grounds continually cleaned, clothes washed and pressed and a sparkling pool. You just can beat it. We paid a peak-time rental fee of $5,000/week, $1,200 for food and drink (we special-ordered lots of seafood and food in general is very expensive in the islands) and a $500 staff tip. This covered all six of us. There were incidentals such as greens fees and tennis fees but it remains a remarkable bargain.

The Golf, Tennis and Beach Clubs were all first rate. Clean, well groomed and supervised. $85 greens fee (with half price for youth) very reasonable for a resort.

We spent a week in Tryall and fell in love! This wasn't our first trip to Jamaica but previously we stayed in a hotel and it didn't compare to the villas! My family of five visited in April with three other families. We stayed with another gruop of five in Tradewinds. It was perfect, we had a beach front villa with an amazing staff. The meals were delicious perfect for children and adults, I reccomend the pumpkin soup! The children's ages ranged from six to sixteen and everyone was entertained! Golfing, tennis, and relaxing by the pool were the adults main priority while the kids fell in love with the water trampoline, regaee dance classes, and splashing in the pool! Tryall is a great family place but I reccomend going with a big group. While we were there we went out on a sailboat stopping for scuba diving and of course Margariteville! Make sure to check out the hilarious slide, a big thumbs up on both adults and kids. Back at Tryall we made sure not to skip tea and cookies and for the adults, happy hour! Going home was sad as always but we all agreed we missed our staff the most. Not only were they amazing cooks, gardeners, laundresses, and butlers, they were the kindest most loving people. We left Tryall with new friends, big laughs, and lasting memories!

We spent a week at Sunrise villa in Tryall in November and loved it. This was our first time at Tryall, but our 4th time in Jamaica.

Sunrise Villa at Tryall is our favorite Caribbean villa out of the 5 we have stayed at in Jamaica, Barbados and St Martin. It is a lovely 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom bungalow with its own pool and its own private beach. The food and service in the villa were great. Tryall is a lovely resort with beautiful grounds and a nice beach.

We love villa vacations in general, they work especially well for us since our 4 year old daughter has food allergies. It is much easier to explain to the cook what not to make than to have to ask the waiter at every meal and not be sure.

The villa was perfect for us with 2 children ages 4 & 6, plus 3 other adults. It was big enough and well furnished including a DVD and VCR player for the kids (and a TV in every room which we didn't actually use). The bedrooms were Air Conditioned, but we never used them because it was not that hot, we used the ceiling fans instead. It had a nice outdoor sitting area that was shaded. The small beach was sandy and the kids could play in it and we were only 100 yards from the main beach.

The staff were very friendly and accommadating. The cook made great meals every night taking into account my daughters allergies, the fact that 2 us were vegetarian and that the rest ate meat. The meals were tasty and well prepared and served to us. It great to have someone else cook and serve us and clean up.

Price wise, we could not afford Tryall in high season, but in the off-season and sharing with others, it was in our price range. Food was expensive as others have reported, but that is just a fact of life in the Caribbean. The food at the commisary is more expensive than if you shop at the grocery stores in Montego Bay, but you have to buy the weeks worth of groceries to make up for the taxi ride. We spent about $1000 US for food for 2 children and 5 adults for the week including alcohol, but we are not heavy drinkers. Also, where possible you can save money by buying jamaican groceries. Jamaican bottled water is 1/3 the price of foreign for example. We bought most of our weeks supplies in Montego Bay, then topped up what we needed at the Commissary.

Villa vacations are more about relaxing for us, but Tryall has quite a lot to do. There is golf, tennis and at the beach they had basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, sailboats and kayaks. One nice feature is the towel service and bar at the beach. We went on the nature walk and the villa tour one day. The villa tour tends to show the most luxurious villas which are gorgeous but very expensive.

The beach itself is good, but not great, there are some rocky parts so its probably a good idea to have surf shoes. However, it was very quiet and there was usually only 1 other family there when we were there.

The only negative thing that happened to us was that despite the fact that we booked a ride from the airport, the driver was not there to meet us. This was a bit of a pain after an early morning flight with 2 small kids. After 2 phone calls, they eventually sent someone else 30 minutes later. Despite me mentioning it at check in, no one followed up or apologized. I went to make sure their was a taxi for my brother the next day and they said no problem, but their driver was not there either and they had to wait as well. The funny thing was the taxi ended up costing only $50 instead of the $70 that Tryall charges so next time I will just get one at the airport.

I read other posts complaining about dirt and bugs, but both our villas were very clean and they cleaned and did laundry every day. You do see some bugs, but I have never been to the Caribbean and not seen bugs so I don't know what they expected.

I can't imagine why some of the posts were so negative. If you were expecting huge, luxurious villas like some of the ones at Tryall, ours was more modest by comparison, but I wouldn't have wanted it any fancier with small kids. If you eat in 5 star, gourmet restaurants every night then maybe the food would not meet your standards, but for everyone else it is great.

By comparison, we went to Silver Sands last year and it had more modest villas with less services and activities, but it had a nicer beach and was cheaper. If you are cost sensitive, it is a good option, especially in high season. Tryall is more upmarket and luxurious with nicer facilities and more to do, but you pay for it. If you want lots of activities and partying, then you would be better off at an all-inclusive.

I would definitely go back to Tryall and Sunrise in particular. If you want a relaxing vacation with great food for a family or a group, then Tryall is an excellent choice.

We first went to Tryall in 2002 at seaview, then fairwinds and tradewinds and then pinnancle. We have 2 small children, so loved being able to swim in the pool and then come up for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Food is reasonable compared with eating out. How good is it to wake up to have coffee made for u looking over the ocean. Summaries of NY times to read everyday and the kids has a tv to watch whilst we lounged enjoying dinner. The kids loved riding around the resort on golf cart and we would do a spooky ride of a night. The beach is ok and the kids club has its good and bad points. The golf course is good and cheap and caddies are wonderful. The best way to go is with a group of friends and get 2 homes, so the kids have others to play with and they can arrange dinners on one house or another. It was a true vacation for my wife, where else can u get a staff of 4 for a few hundred dollars a week in off peak
