“Good location, not so good restaurant”
Reviewed March 16, 2012

This hotel is rather new. Although it has been built in the so-called "industrial sector" of this small village, if you get a room with sea view (paramout you ask for one), you are likely to forget this, because those rooms are just overlloking the dramatic coastline, the ocean and the neighbout island of Corvo. The hotel is modern and rooms nice, although you cannot expect luxury. There seems to be a huge problem with staff - there is an obvious shortage of it, everywhere in the hotel. Do not expect extra services. Just use the hotel to sleep and rest, but organise your own programme, as there will not be anything organised for you there. And avoid the restaurant, possibly one of the worst on the island. Go rather to the Servi Flor Restaurant or further away to Forno Trasmontano, Por do Sol or, with some caution, to Baleia Ocidental, near by.

This is a lovely hotel with a great view. The service and a food was not so good. The Island is beautiful with 7 lagoons, a large number of waterfalls and many flowers, rabitts and birds. The Island is very quiet island. I live in the same archipelago (Azores) and this island is the second one most beautiful. Uf you want to eat a very nice meal, try the Forno Transmontano Restaurant and the Pôr de Sol restaurant. My advice get a car to explore the Island and go to the smallest Island called Corvo, you can get there by boat and with luck you can see dolphins and wales.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view to the sea

At the edge of Europe and feeling sometimes like the very edge of the world, it's hard not to love Flores. And with its large guestrooms with huge double beds and breathtaking views across the sea to Corvo, it's hard to not to at least like very much Santa Cruz das Flores's newest (and only 4-star) hotel.

We stayed for 4 nights in April and experienced the legendary Azorean "4 seasons in 1 day" of sweeping clouds and dramatic sunlight before finishing with "1 season for 4 days" when the storm dug in its heels and the wind prevailed. The hotel has a games room with [American] Pool for rainy days and an outdoor swimming pool for sunnier ones. There is also a gym. The TV in the bar has extra sports channels that aren't in the guestrooms and there is free Wi-Fi in communal areas. Staff were helpful, professional, knowledgeable and some very friendly.

Breakfast is served from 0800 - 1000 and on occasion 0800 found groups of walkers waiting at the door. Local breads, cheeses and yoghurts are very good but there is no fresh fruit juice, only squash. Scrambled eggs and bacon are presented side by side on the same hot plate (vegetarians take note!). There are lots of different teas available and the coffee isn't bad. Breakfast is served in the main restaurant where there are more fantastic ocean views. You can order a espresso from the bar too if you need it! Room service was quite reasonably priced for a 4-star hotel.

The hotel is a 10-minute walk from the airport where you can arrange car-hire. We used local buses to get to Ponta Delgada on the northeast of the island and on a weekday the timetable allows day trips from Santa Cruz to Lajes and, with a change, on to Fajã Grande. For the full timetable go to the Tourist Information office in Santa Cruz - they're very helpful and will also provide you with a list of taxi phone numbers in case you get stuck. Buses don't run on the weekend so we had to take a taxi for a half-day tour of the south and west of the island. The price was €65 for 4 hours and we had a great driver who read the weather perfectly and took us to the 7 lakes and caldeiras in the centre of the island as well as some wonderful Miradouros that we'd only have got to otherwise with our own transport. The short walk from Fajã Grande to Poço do Bacalhau (pool at the bottom of a waterfall) is worth it too.

Room Tip: You've got to ask for a sea view!
