“Truly amazing time in Rarotonga and at The Edgewater Resort”
Reviewed May 27, 2011

We have just returned from an amazing holiday in Rarotonga - a must for anyone thinking about a holiday in one of the Pacific Islands......we will definitely return!!!
I made contact with Yvonne from The Edgewater at the time of booking our accommodation and arranged for an upgrade to the Beachfront Deluxe Suites staying on the 3rd floor so that we could stay in comfort and be able to enjoy the view!! I must admit that after reading some reviews on TripAdvisor just before we left I was sceptical as to whether that would actually happen but I needn't have worried. Yvonne had organised everything and we did indeed end up on the top floor in the suites!!
Our rooms were cleaned every morning, the meals at the resort were very tasty, the cocktails were very moreish and the atmosphere was great! The staff were friendly and accommodating.....nothing was a problem! The spa in the suites was very relaxing at the end of the day and even eased the sunburn!!!
We hired scooters from Budget who's office was at the resort and this was hassle free and great considering it was all on hand. Hiring scooters is definitely a must as we had so much fun and explored the island at our leasure. Even though the cost of petrol was $2.67 a litre it only cost us $19 for 4 full days of fun!!!
I'd suggest Cafe Salsa for coffee lovers, Trader Jacks for seafood lovers and Dockside Burgers for burger and wrap lovers......all at reasonable prices too! For cheap drinks try happy hour from 4-6pm at the sailing club just near town - all drinks were $2.50 and normal prices outside happy hour were $5......cheaper than most pubs in NZ at full rate anyway!!!
The bonus of Rarotonga is that it's NZ dollars and not expensive as we had been warned it would be. A truly fantastic destination!!!!!

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade to Beachfront Deluxe Suites!

Edgewater Resort caters primarily for younger Aussies and Kiwis who like a good time and a knees-up - and perhaps they wear national flag underwear - we didn't stop to find out. The rooms we saw were not well maintained and you got the general feeling that "fleece the touurist" was the mission statement that the staff had drummed into them. From Europe, it's costly to get to the Cook Islands so spend a bit more on accommodation and book yourself into a different resort -- any will do, they're all better than Edgewater.

Room Tip: Go to any other hotel.

Readers: Nearly 20,000 guests holiday at The Edgewater Resort and Spa each year. Approximately 15% of guests are from Europe or North America. 85% of guests come from New Zealand and Australia. 25% of guests are 45-59 years old. Younger Kiwis and Aussies (25-34 years) comprise approximately 16% of guests. In May 2011 the Resort did have a large number of weddings and this reflected in the mix of guests staying during that period.

The Resort has been providing a warm Polynesian welcome for nearly 40 years. We are a full service resort with 300 rooms offering 3.5 – 4 star accommodation and aim to deliver a “5 star experience”. There is a broad range of accommodation to fit all budgets. The accommodation ranges from hotel rooms/suites to 3 bedroom villas. Nearly 50% of the room stock is under 10 years old.

Tip: To avoid disappointment our recommendation for any traveller is to do your research and make sure you explain clearly to your local travel agent the type of holiday experience you are looking for.

Many thanks!

Our stay at The Edgewater was during the busy Easter long weekend and the place was pretty packed with parents and kids. We were in a group of 8 but were pretty disappointed when they gave us rooms in different buildings but it wasn't a big deal.

The close proximity to the beach made it easy to go snorkelling every day and the lounge chairs facing the sunset was amazing. We did however, have an issue with ants that crawlled everywhere in our room. But with a bit of bug spray, it wasn't a big deal either.

The tropical breakfast that came with the room wasn't the best as it was just bread and cereal and fruit. You can order and pay for the American breakfast but it was a little to pricey for us.

The attitude of the receptionist could improve. We wanted to go to Traders Jack for dinner and asked the receptionist to help us book a table, which she stated that it's not needed and they don't take bookings. But, surprise surprise, when we arrived.. they were fully booked! and we had to wait 45min for a table.

Overall, the Edgewater Resort and Spa was decent and not too expensive but there is a downside such as the receptionist and ants. But the pool and beach is lovely and the happy hour cocktails are delicious and cheap.

Stayed at Edgewater as part of a package deal. We stayed in a Garden Room. The room was pretty basic, but the bathroom was clean with excellent shower pressure. The bed coverlet was a bit grubby, but the staff were friendly and accommodating about replacing it.

The resort is a bit dated, and quite large, and family friendly, so you just need to manage your expectations. The breakfast is pretty standard, but large quantities. The on-site restaurant wasn't really worth it, especially because there are heaps of restaurants within walking distance each direction. We found the service incredibly slow, and they weren't at all attentive.

Having the budget car rental on site was awesome, and it's super handy to be able to sit your scooter practical test and get your temporary licence on-site. The roads on the island are pretty good quality, and scootering is an really fun way to get around.

The beach was beautiful and the snorkeling was great, although it's worth trying some other spots on the island as well, as the water was a bit on the shallow side at the Edgewater. The sun-loungers need a bit of TLC, but are still comfy. The pool is fine, but full of kiddies, we just played in the sea instead.

Besides the slow restaurant service, the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and were accommodating with the slightly antisocial arrival and departure times, courtesy of AirNZ!

Would recommend the Edgewater, but just don't expect 5-star accomodation. From other reviews, it does sound like upgrading to a beachfront room is worth it.

We were booked into a Garden Room, and while we enjoyed our stay here if we return we will spend a bit more money on a Beachfront room next time. The Garden Rooms are adequate, but we had higher expectations and were a little disappointed with the room. However the bed was very comfortable, the air conditioning worked well, and the shower had excellent pressure. The room was clean when we arrived, but housekeeping didn't clean the sand out of our shower that had accumulated there on our 2nd day, and stayed there until we checked out on the 6th day. I did expect the shower to be cleaned at least once during our stay, but it wasn't touched.
The restaurant is adequate, but for excellent food head to The Spagetti House, also part of the resort. Amazing food and good value.
Happy hour at the bar served $10 cocktails, and the bar staff were excellent in giving us recommendations.
The in-house movie channel was a little disappointing, as it showed movies filmed off a cam at cinemas (illegal) and movies with "for your consideration" popping up during them (Academy Awards screener copies). So they've clearly obtained illegal copies of films and I felt that for what we were paying they could spend money and obtain legal and proper copies of films to screen. We saw audience heads popping up during 'Clash of the Titans' on our TV screen!!
The internet in the games room is $11 for one hour. This is fine, except the computer I was on took 16 minutes to load one page. I don't mind spending so much if I get to use my full hour, but so much of that time was wasted waiting for pages to load.
The wi-fi, however, I had no problems with when it came to speed, but perhaps it shouldn't have a time limit on it. I bought 70mgs for $20 and it expired after 24 hours. I should not have to spend $20 every 24 hours just to keep up with work on my own laptop.
Overall, our stay was comfortable and staff were in general very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was excellent, though I did open one bag of cereal that was stale. The muffins, selection of spreads, and selection of juices were very good.
The free luggage storage was much appreciated, and the staf didn't seem to mind us waiting around in reception for our shuttle bus to the airport.

We recently spent two weeks at the Edgewater with family and freinds. This being our fourth time to the island. We stayed in garden rooms which were very clean and comfortable and value for money.
The excellent location of the Resort made it easy to hire scooters,go on tours[which most Tour companies picked you up from reception]and is central to a lot of good restaurants.
We commend management for having such dedicated and helpful staff-from Housekeeping to Restaurant, especially the Activities Co-ordinater and his staff who were always more than helpful.
There is nothing about The Edgewater that we didn't enjoy.
We had a great holiday and a lot of fun and laughs.Cant wait to return.

Room Tip: Garden Room adaquately met our needs.
