We chose this hotel because our friends got a deal and we wanted to stay with them. We looked it up and comments were mostly positive so thought it would be fine. Most aspects were good but beware of the bad listed below.

The good:
View from rooms was beautiful
Lagoon superior rooms were very nice, had spa baths and were right on the beachfront
Housekeeping staff were great, friendly and caring and let me in while waiting for my partner to get back
We rented scooters from the hotel's budget rental shop - best way to get around
Relaxed and friendly attitude from staff
Snorkelling was amazing in the reef right outside the hotel beachfront - take some bread from breakfast to feed the fish

The bad:
Food at on site restaurant was a bit over priced and average quality; our 4 friends ate here and two of them were served when the other two had finished eating

I got bed bugs - very itchy and embarassing the beds in standard rooms were old and a bit hard. Our friends in another standard room said one of them got a few bites too that sounded like bed bugs. We were in standard rooms; if you're going to stay here I would recommend getting the superior rooms like one of our friends did.

Rarotonga is beautiful and we highly recommend the trip - had an awesome time

Kia Orana,
“Readers please be assured that we do not have bed bugs. During April we sold approximately 4,000 room nights…so that is close to 2,000 guests stayed on the property during this time. Most of our rooms have had 3-4 different bookings in each room during this period. No other guests have raised this issue with us.

We operate on standard food and beverage margins of approx 35%. The price of our product compared to NZ or Australian equivalents reflects the higher transport and ancillary costs associated with delivery to the Pacific Islands.”

We split our stay into two rooms with a visit to Atiu in between. The Edgewater is a great resort for families and groups. We travelled with 2 kids under 10. Our first few nights were in a 3 bedroom villa. It was a great size and clean. The only downside was inconsiderate groups who sat out on their patios at night making noise to all hours, even after midnight. I was surprised The Edgewater didn't have a curfew like most resorts have. Our second room was a beachfront deluxe suite. This worked well and all 4 of us fitted in comfortably. The room was a bit musty but not uncomfortable. This end of the resort was quieter.

We didn't find a beach with better snorkeling than that straight outside the EdgeWater. It's not an attractive swimming beach, but you can head to Muri or another beach if you want to swim in the sea. The pool is good, but with so much expansion to the resort, it needs to be bigger. Again, the resort has everything you need, it's we'll presented but not a deluxe resort, so don't have a to higher expectation.

Probably the best asset The Edgewater is the service from the staff. This was our first Pacific Island holiday where we didn't notice Island time for service. Everyone was friendly and we were well looked after whether at reception, our room, the bar, or restaurant.

We initially couldn't decide between the Edgewater or The Rarotongan for our stay. We chose these two for the activities for the kids. Out of interest we visited the Rarotongan to check it out as we were recommended The Edgewater over it. We didn't get passed the front door. We asked at reception if we could view a room and were told to take a seat. After waiting quite a while and listening to staff interaction with guests issues we walked out having been completely ignored, and glad we chose The Edgewater.

We see The Edgewater as a good, reliable resort for groups and families. The pool/bar area could do with a bit of a makeover compared to other resorts we've stayed. We had no complaints about the rooms we stayed in.

Arrived in early March for our wedding (not held at the resort). After a lot of online research we decided to organise our stay at The Edgewater and booked a garden room. I must agree with other visitors: The basic Garden rooms are very much outdated and require a much overdue makeover. We were in block 900 and found that to be too far away from the pool and activities. Even though many reviews had stated the same about the garden rooms , we decided that we would only be using the rooms to sleep in but the rooms were worse than I thought they would be. We were upgraded to a Garden Superior room (near the pool area) which was great and we had friends/family in both the beachfront and lagoon rooms as well which all received good reports. The staff at the activities hut were great especially John and we thank the staff for making our stay here wonderful, but I must admit that even though the majority of the staff were great we found a few (on the front desk) hard to deal with and many times got differing answers depending on the staff involved. The island night was great (not to be missed) and the food at the resort was good as were the cocktails. Overall If you want a great value holiday resort for families, which has great activities and a lovely beach area then this is the resort for you.

Stayed at Edgewater for one night on way to Aitutaki and 2 nights on way back to NZ during our honeymoon.

Overall impression is that this place was special once upon a time (about the same time as the photo's of Mal Meninga in Mal's bar were taken) but it's now a bit of a throw-back and tatty round the edges. In the Garden Rooms (We stayed in the 700 block in our second stint) there is not much evidence of capital investment - shabby is the best description.

The bed and room ok but bathroom off putting. No hotel should leave black mould in grouting and seals when a simple spray of household bleach can keep it at bay. Would only need to be done once a week, basic cleanliness really. The bathroom in our second stint had black dirt in the the tap fixtures which came out when turning the tap on and off - a bit gag really.

Breakfast was inclusive and sufficient. Your basic continental set up.

Probably great for families but not ideal for honeymooners.

I've given this review 3/5 but only because 2.5 isn't an option. The Edgewater treads the line between poor and average and as a Cook Islands' institution deserves a bit of TLC and modernisation.

Was transferred here after my flight home was cancelled.
My room was absolutely filthy, with rat poo,
a huge crack in bottom of shower and even blood on wall in bathroom!
It was the garden room we stayed in, i dont think iv ever stayed in such a grubby hotel room .To make things worse they told us we had complimentry tropical breakfast, once we ate, they proceded to charge us $20.00 each for breakfast! when i complained they said there was a mix up and would only refund half the bill...sorry bad service bad room!

Room Tip: would only get a deluxe suite if any
