Description: A great quirky casual dining experience. Opened since 1979 it still has the same owners and the same name. It is a mix of eclectic and local island decor. The walls feature an array of photos of events, people and things. The ceilings are a collage of various types of posters etc. The Tumunu Garden Restaurant also features the "largest little notebook" on the island. Come visit us! A fun place for children too with a garden and "dancing laser fire flys"

My husband and were disappointed at the service we received at this restaurant. We chose the restaurant from reviews on Trip Advisor but were then truly disappointed that it did not live up to its expectations. We went early to the restaurant and at that stage there were only a few other customers present. We chose to sit outside rather than inside which may have been a mistake because as the restaurant and bar filled up, it became obvious that the owner and staff were more interested in their regular customers at the bar. The entree was fairly quick to arrive ( spring rolls, samosas with salad) which were average but did arrive fairly promptly after ordering. However, our steaks had still not arrived an hour after finishing our entree and we had to ask twice before they appeared. In that time no one came near our table to replenish drinks - we again had to go in search of service. One of the waitresses ( not our original waitress was extremely apologetic once she realised that our main order had been overlooked but then told us that they were now in the process of just starting to cook the steaks 40 mins after we had finished of entree. The steaks, once they arrived were very nice but definitely not worth waiting an hour for. We had stayed in Rarotonga for 9 days and understand about Cook Island Time - but in all the restaurants we dined in, this was a ridiculous amount of time to have to wait.

I am sorry that the service was slow for you at our restaurant. Normally our service is spot on. It is normal that we show our staff these reviews so they can learn from them or receive an accolade. Perhaps the next time you are in Rarotonga you can give us the opportunity to make this up to you.

If you like seafood then you should come here, the seafood platter was the largest and most extensive I have seen and was very tasty- we couldn't finish it all and at $75 for two people very reasonable. The service was very average and my coke was flat and the kids meals for nuggets and chips for $12 was in my opinion really expensive compared to others on the island. We ate inside and it has great character but the outside area looked lovely so book a garden table if u get a chance.

Thanks so much for your review. I am so happy that you enjoyed the platter and the ambience. I do have to apologise for "average service" though. We astrive to do more then that and obviously we failed in this instance. All the reviews we receive we do attention to our staff so they can appreciate them and also learn from them..

As a family we enjoyed the unique island setting of the Tumunu restaurant, we shared an Incredible seafood platter this was amply for 2 adults. A childrens menu is on offer, vegetarian dishes, and a full A la-carte menu. The evening we were there the restaurant was extremely busy the service was prompt and courteous. This restaurant is fully licensed it also has a BYO .
A wonderful meal to bring to a closure a fabulous holiday in Rarotonga.

I would recommend reservations.

Thanks very much or Metiaki Maata as we would say in the CookIslands. It is always good to get a review - good and not so good. In every case though we do share them with all the staff so they can take pride in being apprecaited and also to learn from their shortfalls on occassions.

This was a good venue, though a bit quiet when we went and it's pretty big so we felt it. They seated us miles away from the bar so getting service was a bit of a pain. Picture the scene, large entry restaurant and three couples in a corner at the opposite end to the bar. Anyway, the bonus was it was quiet. We had the seafood platter, which is what the restaurant is famed for and we weren't disappointed, very filling and very tasty.
The only down side was they didn't give you complementary tap water on the table. A few other places on Raro are the same but it's not consistent. If it is to do with water quality then fine but don't just say no, explain it.

Kia orana and thankyouf ro your review.

I am very happy that you enjoyed the food, service and ambience. Water is a major issue ont he island and we have been constantly in long periods of drought with only temporary relief on occassion. The staff should have said to you that almost all restaurants on rarotonga only serve bottled water. This is because the pipes are porous and in bad need of flushing and cleaning and/or replacing. The health department in Rarotonga does recommend drinking only bottled or filtered water. Youa re quite right, the girls should have told you that the water quality at this time on the island is too poor to be drinking directly from the tanks or mains. I have taken your comments on board and the staff have now been advising guests of the quality of the water.
