Good for: Large groups, Families with children, Special occasions, Local cuisine, Bar scene
Dining options: Dinner, Late Night, Reservations
Description: A great quirky casual dining experience. Opened since 1979 it still has the same owners and the same name. It is a mix of eclectic and local island decor. The walls feature an array of photos of events, people and things. The ceilings are a collage of various types of posters etc. The Tumunu Garden Restaurant also features the "largest little notebook" on the island. Come visit us! A fun place for children too with a garden and "dancing laser fire flys"

Lovely gardens and a great location,
I have visited a few times and was let down with my last visit.
The sea food platter is very big, a huge feed for two people- mussels, oysters, scallops, shrimp, prawn twisters, king prawns, battered fish and Ika Mata.
Ofcourse, the shellfish is imported from NZ, so you expect that to be not as great as you would get there, but I expected better with the fish. The fish wasn't bad but the Ika Mata had a strong fishy flavour, definitely the worst Ika Mata I have had on the island.

The deserts are good.

I really do not feel that this restaurant deserves it's 4 star rating. I would not reccomend it, there are pleanty of much nicer resaurants in the area within the same price bracket.
As I have visited before, I do not feel as if this can be explained by the owners being over sea's.

Thanks so much for your review. We all learn from having critiques done. Teh team at the Tumunu Garden Restaurant are all for that. Our wait staff have developed their own sense of humour and wit. They are typical Maukeans who have a repurtation for being chirpy and happy. Very happy that you enjoyed that experience.

Look forward to seeing you again one day in beautiful Rarotonga

“Love the Mash!”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

Had a great meal here - chose the Rib Eye with Prawns. The local spinach mash was so morash - i could have eaten a bucket full.

Service very friendly - you can also bring in a bottle of wine for a small corkage.

“Decent fish”
Reviewed May 6, 2013

This place looked like it would have a great atmosphere but was worth only one visit.
We had a fish plate for two and they adjusted it for gluten free. The mussels, scallops and oysters were excellent but the salad was basic and the fish was dry.
Overall, we were a little disappointed.

Thanks so much for you feed back. We are very happy that our chef could accommodate the gluten free requirement for you. We also apologize for the standard of the platter. Rarely do we get negative feedback with this meal. Perhaps there was too much concentration on ensuring the meal was gluten free which led to a neglect of the platter in general.
I do hope that if you ever visit Rarotonga again that you will come in and make yourselves known to us so we can talk.

visited here in 2011 and back again this April.Last time we loved the sea food plater and it was large.A real tasty meal for two .This time we shared it with three and it was still filling, but my wife really wanted to try one of the deserts as well
Easy walking from the Edgewater resort a couple of min down the road.Super friendly staff and really nice dishes.
You can sit inside or out under the covered tables.
Yes well worth the visit.

We loved our dinner at Tumunu restaurant. Good service and great atmosphere. We enjoyed the lights that surrounded us and the little guest that joined us (the gecko's).

Thanks so much for a really great revue. Really happy that the Staff were as they always are - friendly and fun. Also that you enjoyed our live in "Geckos). They can be quite entertaining when they use the lights globes as their own little playground. Hope you come back to see us again and that our service and food will be equally good.
