Description: A great quirky casual dining experience. Opened since 1979 it still has the same owners and the same name. It is a mix of eclectic and local island decor. The walls feature an array of photos of events, people and things. The ceilings are a collage of various types of posters etc. The Tumunu Garden Restaurant also features the "largest little notebook" on the island. Come visit us! A fun place for children too with a garden and "dancing laser fire flys"

Thanks so much for a very nice review. We like to show the staff our reviews as this gives them great satisfaction when they are so complimentary and they hope to learn from the ones that are perhaps less flattering. We know we have a great crew and as we are overseas at present, we feel they are doing an exceptional job.

We hope that you will return to the Tumunu one day and feel the service and atmosphere are just as you remembered it.

“Time stands still at the Tumunu”
Reviewed September 3, 2012

After a period of 32 years, I finally got to return to the Tumunu. I was drawn there by the memory of a very pleasant meal there in 1980 and by the advertised Seafood Platter for two for just $NZ75.00.

Unfortunately, time has stood still at the Tumunu and the decor is fairly much as I remember it from all that time ago. The ceiling is still decorated with advertising posters from the 1970s and 80s (and possibly before) and we felt that it all looked a bit sad. During that time, there has been an explosion of restaurants on Rarotonga and this one is being outclassed somewhat.

BUT! What of the food? My wife and I shared a very tasty seafood platter and it really was very good. To be a little bit picky about it, for us there was possibly an over-abundance of fried food, but for all that, it was enjoyable - particularly with a drop or two o New Zealand Pinot Gris.

At the time we visited, there were very few people at the restaurant.

Kia orana and thanks you for taking the time out to post this review.

The Tumunu is the only restaurant on the island that still has the same name and same owners!! Yes the posters are a little outdated but that is a project in motion. Many suppliers on the island are collecting new advertsiing for us to repaste our ceiling with. The garden area has been opened up to be able to dine in as well. You said it was sa d that it hasn't really changed, but that is the very thing that many people who return to our shores like. .The thatchingon the roof has been re done as new and the signage is also a recently completed project. Also our regulars are often identified after years of still sitting in the same place, talking to the same people and drinking the same drinks. That is poart of the charm of our Tumunu. I do hope that you come visit us again sooner then 32 years!

Thanks so much for taking the time to revview our Tumunu. we are very happy that you enjoyed it once again. I do apologise for the increase but unfortunately this is the first increase in over 5 years and mainly due to not being able to absorb the increase in product any longer. We have tried to make the platter in artiicular still reasonable for 2 people.

“Excellent”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

I highly recommend Tumunu to fellow travelers to Rarotonga, we eat at the Tumunu each time we visit Rarotonga (7 times), the food is very tasty, large portions, excellent presentation and service. Great value for money. This last trip (August 2012), we ate twice at the Tumunu, we had steak both times, it was cooked to perfection. The staff were bubbly and very friendly. I really have to also comment on the mash potatoes, with spinach, onions and cheese, this accompanys most meals and is delicious. The only down side of this last visit was we missed seeing Eric as he was overseas.
