“Totally disappointed.”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

I'll start with the positives: the garden is lovely. I liked the paintings on the insides of the windows. The staff were lovely and friendly.
It was a shame about the food.
I had ika mata for a starter. It had literally 3 small pieces of fish swimming in a bowl of coconut milk topped with lettuce and cucumber. When I complained it was replaced with a bowl full of fish which was great except it was immediately whipped off the table and taken away because our mains were ready.
My husband was still eating his eating his starter as well and his was whisked away as well.

My main - a vegetarian curry was par boiled potato, cold chunks of unripe tomato in a swamp of what tasted like soy sauce with a number of pieces of cinnamon bark in it. It was inedible.
My husband had chicken stuffed with cream cheese and pesto in a creamy sauce with chilli potatoes. He said it was heavy going.

I could not eat my main - to their credit they didn't charge me for it.

Another couple at our hotel had the same experience with the meat version of the curry. Do not order it.

Dear Karenholiday, thanks for taking the time to review Kikau Hut restaurant - we are disappointed with your review and we do agree some things went wrong with your meal that were not acceptable - but we also believe that we went about putting things to right for you - so we find your score is harsh. Firstly thank you for the positives ie the garden, the art and the service being freindly. With regard to your meal - I became involved when you pointed out to me that your IkaMata (which you had finished) had only 3 pieces of fish in it - I cleared that plate from you, gave it to one of the staff, then went and arranged another entree of IkaMata for you - however when your first plate was taken to the kitchen the staff member thought the table was away and called it to the Chef - who then prepared your mains. Hence they were delivered promptly as he was unaware that you were still eating your second IkaMata - by all accounts your husband had finished his entree and asked one of the staff to take his plate away - which would be right given that you had eaten your first IkaMata and were halfway through your second serve. At the time I apologised to you both that your meals were prepared so quickly - but you were both fine with it. I then came back to check your meals and you advised that there were problems with your curry but your husband said he totally enjoyed his meal. I offered you an alternative meal and you declined and so when settling the account I took the full price of the curry off the account - which you were very appreciative of ....At the end of service that evening we had discussions about the curry that night and have sorted the situation. Again we apologise about your meal not being up to standard but we do think that you have been overly harsh given that we fronted the issues and dealt with them in a positive manner.

“Our favorite place to eat!!!”
Reviewed December 24, 2012 via mobile

Our favorite place to eat. We dined at the kikau Hut three times while staying in Rarotonga.

Food was delicious and fresh. Generous sizes as well. Desert was amazing we loved the benoffee pie couldn't get enough of it.

Kevin the owner comes around for a chat and to check that everything is all good which we found really nice of him.

Overall this place is amazing to dine in. We will definetly be back for that pie yumm.

Fresh food. Great hosts. Rather pricey but worth it. Seafood was beautiful. Watch out for mosquitos though, take insect repellent with you!

Hi SallyS thanks so much for taking the time to review Kikau Hut and great that you enjoyed your meal. Yes it is a tricky time of year - being wetter for mosquitos - we do light coils early in the afternoon and have spray freely available to our diners. Trust you enjoyed your visit to the Cook Islands and all the very best for 2013 Kevin Cathy & the team

“Beautiful food and warm friendly service”
Reviewed December 18, 2012

Group of 4 of us arrived late one night after doing a day tour. It was no problem for them to cook us a meal even though we were the only ones in the restaurant at that time of night. We had a wonderful meal.
