Good prices, good location, bad food. Hotel Istiam is OK. Our room was nice and spacious and the bathroom was clean. The restaurant was really bad and there were millions of flies everywhere. The island of Ometepe is quite big so by staying in Hotel Istiam you are far away from shops, restaurants and ATMs. Stay here for one or two nights while doing activities, and then leave!

We stayed here for one night. The taxi driver brouht us here en after that there was no choice of stayinh here becauss we couldn't get away with our backpacks from the midle of nowere. The location is qiuet and remote you need to rent a bike to go somwere. Food in the reastaurant is very basic en not very nice. But above al these things the staff was very very rude. They didnt't make any effort to help us wile we don't speak spanish and made us wait 1,5 hour before we could see the room!!
We left after one night!

Upon arriving on Ometepe we had not planned or booked any accommodations. We met a very nice cab driver who we paid $25 to drive us here from ferry. We made it way quicker than the bus would have and as he spoke good english it felt like we got an island tour! He suggested hotel Istiam as he knew the owners. We paid $20 for a private room and bathroom but it was very bare bones and one door did not lock properly - with it being so close to the main road it felt sketchy.
Had breakfast that was very sub-par, not the best service in the world, I know it can be hard with language barriers but smiles go a long way! We kind of felt like we wasted a night staying here altho the price is good, better for younger crowd and we were honeymooners!

I visited ometepe for three nights with my family. Booking right before Christmas we didn't have many options since it was peak season. Another hotel owner recommended this one, as it is Nica-owned--thus especially supporting a local family. Doña Nora, the owner, is a sweet woman who was ready to attend and also visit.

The room we shared between 4 adults (bunk bed, single, and a double) was clean, breezy, and had mosquito screens. The food was quite good for breakfast, and for dinner I'd recommend above all the whole fried fish. DELICIOUS. The Playa Santo Domingo gets a lot of wind, so if you like bigger waves it was good, but it wasn't the most impressive beach. However the location--on the isthmus between the two volcanoes--was great. Also, the prices were very reasonable. I'd go back again!

Arrived with a group and our driver (who turned out to be a friend, possibly even the son of the owners) recommended it to us. The only thing ok about this place was the food. The rooms were disgusting and stuffy, with one horrendously unsanitary shared shower for all.. I could barely sleep all night becasue it was so hot and with no screen to open the window, also the beds were pretty foul...and there was NO BEER!?!?! I'm still wondering about that one.

I think the overall WORST part about this place was the service. The staff was so rude, and I'm saying this knowing this is a common problem in Central America. I'm being generous when I say I was mortified by their apathy and general attitude towards helping the guests with anything.

The views are great and it's across from the lake, but if you go just a little farther down the road (which we did the next night) there's better accommodations for the same price-- like Little Morgan's, where we went the next day.

Room Tip: Get one with a private bathroom.. if you still decide to stay here..

REally good food and very economical !
These photos don't do the place justice with new paintings, new floors, and beautiful gardens.
The history of this locally owned business is amazing. Doña Nora is a farmer who started the Hotel Ometepl in Moyogalpa feeding worker dredging the lake years ago.
Staying locally really helps the local economy too. They are very helpful and it is very economical to stay for a long time.

the hotel is located right next to the best beach spot in the island, with the perfect sand you'll find around here.
the rooms are decent, clean but no hot water unfortunately but the whether is usually hot...
the food here is GREAT and cheap.
