“Pizza in the middle of the jungle”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 20, 2010

I went to Finca El Zopilote because many people were speaking
very well about the Pizza and the natural products made here and i am
very happy i did that.
My room was a cabin called Mariposa with 2 flors, 2 hammocks and very
quite. When i arrived i was little bit scared by the insect and the
animales but inside the room there was a beautiful mosquito net that
really protects you. Funny thing is that there are not mosquitos
because El Zopilote is more hight than the lake and is in a wind
expose hill, so all the time is cool and fresh. The owners are
italians ( actually they came from very near my town ) and they make
a very very good pizza with a big wood fire oven. The pizza is thin
and crispy like in Italy and the atmosfere of the pizzeria is very
nice.
The best thing of el zopilote farm is for sure the pizza and at the
second place there is the Nutella casera ( hand made spread chocolate
).

This permaculture farm/hostel my faviorite i've found traveling. Away from the main road in a quiet place on the side of the volcano where you are in the nature and with all the animals! You hear no machines, only sounds of drums and live music and occasionally the workers machetge cutting bushes.
Owners are cool and very helpful (they will get you a good/cheap guide $5 if you want to hike the volcano), organic pizza night three nights a week, so good!
Big huge lookout they built for the sunset and many yummy homemade goodies and cold beer, over 15 homemade licors and FREE FRUIT!

I could move to this place and waste my life happily!

El Zopilote is, by almost all regards, a hippie commune. Compost toilets, strict recycling, outdoor showers (when the water was turned on at least) and a whole lot of serenity. It's a hefty walk to the nearest town, and quite a walk from the road, but this adds to the charm, its also quite a walk to the lake where you'll inevitably have to bathe when you miss shower time. It's hot, rustic and unglamorous, and a definite change from regular backpacking. The 'staff' are peaceful and friendly.

Unless you bring food, you'll spend your days mostly eating homemade bread and chutneys.Theres free pick-your-own-fruit and free filtered water which tastes better than bottled water! One culinary treat is the bi-weekly pizza night. $4-5 for truly fantastic wood-oven pizza.

We stayed in a tent which, after talking to other travellers, was a much nicer alternative than the dorms which were apparently filled with ants. However it was quite expensive to camp, 80 Cordobas for two people in one tent! The Cabanas seemed like a good option if they are available.Which brings me to my other point: BOOK AHEAD. If you don't and its full (which its very likely it could be) its about a 5km walk to another hotel.

There is the possibility of volunteering on-site, but this requires a great deal of generosity as the only reward for the 5-hour daily labour is about $1 off your accommodation, and revolves around site maintainence and produce-bottling. Therein lies our main criticism of the Finca. Compared to other eco-lodges we've stayed in, El Zopilote offers nearly no support to the surrounding community. All volunteer-work and produce sales are for the profits of the Finca.

On a side note: the main activity in those parts is climbing the towering volcano Maderas. From personal experience, we STRONGLY advise against it if you're doing it for any other reason than competitive massochism. The rewards are very limited, and do not (by general consensus) justify the 9 hour gruelling, steep, muddy hike.
