My girlfriend and I were doing our border run from Costa Rica to Nicaragua with the plans on going to Finca Magdelena. We met Morgan on the Ferry. He offered us a ride to his place and if we didn’t like it we could move on the other 3 kms to Finca Magdelena. That was the first 1.5 hours of the trip around the island taken care of with only 3 kms to go. We took the ride from the crazy Irishman. It was the best part of our trip by far! His place is in the works but seems to me will just be getting better and better. The rooms were nice and clean. The property is a bit rustic but very beautiful. This is not a place for traveler’s looking for luxury (if you are on the island you probably aren’t expecting that anyway). It is just a nice peaceful place to rest your feet for a day or two and relax. He told us he has had people stay for months! Drinking is not required but the atmosphere is very conducive to consumption. The nights are very quiet and peaceful. The sunsets over the volcano from his amazing midador are some of the best I have seen. After we got settled in with the decision to stay and some food in our belly we were talking to Morgan and asked him how many people take him up on the stay and he looked at us with a devilish grin and said “all of them!” He is a really great guy also. He did end up giving us a ride to Finca Magdelena the next day. The guy has been all over the world doing all kinds of odd things. He is putting his time and energy into the community and his place now. We got the pleasure of meeting his son (for which the finca is named) and lots of people in the community. We felt very much at home. Everything was great and can only get better as he continues to work on his finca. If you get an offer of a ride and a place to stay from a bald, half crazy Irishman on the ferry to ometepe you should take it and be prepared for a unique adventure.

Little Morgan's was by far the highlight of my trip to nicaragua. The owner (morgan) is more than willing to help you with any questions you have and is very personable and a pleasure to talk to. The restaurant makes amazing dinners and changes the main course daily, and is very accommodating to vegetarians. The staff was very friendly and the rooms were clean. There was satellite tv and we even got to watch a couple of playoff hockey games which was unexpected in such a remote place, and that's a big deal for canadians! There's also high speed internet which is hard to find on the island. The sunset is the nicest i've ever seen, with the view of volcan concepcion fading into the night. I've stayed at several different hostels on the island, and I would recommend morgan's above all.

We stopped in a private cabin with bathroom.

Before listing the good and bad points about this place I should explain why I gave a low rating.
We called a couple of days in advance to reserve a cabin and spoke to Morgan himself. We explained that we would be setting off from Costa Rica in the morning, intending to arrive at Little Morgan's in the afternoon. He said the cabins were available however he doubted that we would be able to make the journey in one day and that since we were arriving on Sunday he didn't expect many of the ferries from San Jorge to be operating. So he didn't take a reservation but told us to call if we ended up making it to Ometepe. It turned out he was wrong on both counts. Firstly the Trans Nica bus made it to Rivas in Nicaragua by early afternoon, and secondly there were regular ferry departures to Ometepe all day. I would have expected him to know these facts. We couldn't call ahead in the end because our mobile phones weren't working in Honduras so we decided to take our chance on them still being available.

When we got to Little Morgan's there only appeared to be a few young people sat around the bar/pool table area getting stoned, drinking and watching movies and there didn't seem to be anyone in charge. It turned out a couple of these people were actually 'staff'. One of them said he thought there was a free cabin and took us up to it (we had to go back and ask for a key). The room was filthy. Its worth pointing out that these cabins are completely open to the elements (including bugs and wind!) - it has a roof but its not really 'attached' to the walls. I think it had been cleaned a couple of weeks previous but since nobody had obviously stayed in there since then there were dead bugs, cobwebs and bits all over the beds (which had sheets on exposed to the elements). This didn't seem to phase the guy and he went back to his chilling by the bar. We spent a while cleaning the place up.

Maybe like a lot of places on Ometepe Little Morgan's is really remote. There isn't really anywhere to go within walking distance - the small village of Santa Domingo is still quite a distance away and is especially difficult to get to when walking in the dark at night. Therefore you don't have much option but to stay in the bar area. They did cook a great Beef Bourginon with Mashed Potato for most of the guests that evening though and made an omelette for my wife who's a veggie.

We had planned to stay two nights but decided to push on to Granada the next morning instead. Even ordering a taxi to take us to the port was too difficult a task for the staff to handle, so we ended up walking up to the road and towards Santa Domingo and flagged down a bus.

My conclusion is that this has the potential to be a really nice place, however there just doesn't seem to be the staff or organisation at present to make it that. I get the impression that it may be Morgan's 'project' - there were workers in the grounds planting various trees and shrubs, but its still very much 'work in progress'. If you are looking for isolation and time to contemplate life you may enjoy Little Morgan's. Also appreciate that Ometepe Island in general is very remote and isolated, most of the roads are appalling and it takes quite a while to get anywhere (and most of the limited number of taxis aren't 4x4!). Be prepared for that.

Good points:
- Very quiet, secluded, idyllic setting near the lake shore.
- Bar, some food and a pool table avaialble.
- Laptop with pretty fast internet is located in the bar area - you pay for the amount of time you use.
- Bed is comfortable, even if we had to brush it down first!

Bad points:
- Staff seem like they're chilling out on holiday rather than there to do a job.
- Outdoor bathroom - the wasps seemed to be really attracted to the shower which was a little annoying, although an amusing point is that on a middle of the night visit to the toilet I found a cane toad sitting in the shower!
- No hot water, to be expected I suppose
- Too isolated, there are no other restaurants or bars to walk to.
- Room exposed to many bugs and the mosquito nets provided had loads of holes in them (we had our own luckily). There were quite a few wasp nests attached to the rafters of the cabin.
- Dirty room

The place has two private cabins, a couple of dorm cabins and space for tents.

Our apologies to anywone who has a negative experience at Little Morgan´s. We would like to let people know that there is new management and staff here now and we will go out of our way to get you the information and service that you desire. Little Morgan´s has now been open for roughly 2 years, and the property has developed, as well as the business management. It has been a ¨work in progress¨ up until now.

Unfortunately, many of bus and ferry timetables do change with little notice, and even the locals are unsure of when they are or are not running. The best way to look at this is that it is part of the laid back charm that makes up Nicaragua!

There are currently 5 restaurants withing 500m of Little Morgan´s, which means that if guests want a change from our menu, they can easily find other options.

We do believe that our new management and their high standards for cleanliness, presentation and customer service will make your stay in this idyllic location a pleasant and fun experience.

made with so much love on a beautiful spot at the lake. a very relaxed place to hang out for some days. good to meet people, climb the volcano, go horse back riding, swimming, fishing ect.
I wanted to stay a night but ended up not wanting to leave until I had to catch my flight. that's how magical the place is.
bring your own music and play pool at the bar, read a book in one of the several hammocks, have a swim in the lake just some steps away, take a shower in the outdoor shower cabin, enjoy the super comfortable beds, adore the handmade furniture or play backgammon with the cool [-] Irish owner Morgan.

This is by far the best resort on the Island to stay at. Not only is the resort beautiful with all of the natural elements used to build the structures on the resort, but the staff is among the friendliest. The resorts owner Morgan is a friendly Irishman who is always more then happy to help with information or just sit down for a chat. A great resource to have when in a new place.

There is accommodations for all price points. A camp site, a group dorm and then private casitas. There is a bar/ restaurant (best bar and nightlife on the Island no doubt) The food is awesome and well priced. There is internet access and they even showed the Super Bowl!! There is a pool table that is good fun to play during the stay. The floors in the casitas are tiled and each have a private porch and hammock as well as a private bathroom.

The views are stunning the property is well laid out and safe. I would recommend to all definitely the best place to stay on the entire Island by far!!!

Little Morgan's is a great place to stay. Only 5 months old, with a generous, irish owner (Morgan) and fun staff. The bar is the best place on the island to hang out at night. Beds are same price as most of the island (US$6-$8), and the food is great value too. Would love to stay here for a lot longer!
