There are three things that make this hotel an excellent destination (1) the hotel manager (2) the modern installations and (3) the semi-private beach area.

Despite a rocky beginning with a blackout and confusion about room arrangements, we soon fell in love with this spot. The food was excellent, the staff bent over backwards to please my parents and husband and I, and there’s no more perfect oasis from which to enjoy a few days of relaxation.

We found charm in the oxen that would pass in front of the hotel to drink from the lake; in the howler monkeys that roared to life in the morning; and the exotic birds that nested in the property’s trees.

Carved out of an old farm house, the hotel can be described as modest luxury, with cozy hammocks and high-quality furniture.

You have to give kudos to the owners – who deal with frequent black outs (due to an inadequate government power plant) and all the complications of living on an island in a third world country – to bring such a wonderful vacation experience. I’d pass up any day at the Marriott or Intercontinental hotel for a night at Finca San Juan.

An amazing seculuded location, with a hosipitable and kind staff, who will attend to your every need. . The isolation makes it hard to travel around the island without taking a long hike to the road or using their $40 transportation service. The menu serves delicious Nicaraguan food and great beverages. The walls are a little thin.

San Juan de la Isla is a great place

The extensive finca grounds are very nicely located right on the beach between Santo Domingo and Altagracia.

It is easy walking distance along the beach to the town of Santo Domingo, there is a great private beach for swimming on, or it is possible to go for a horseride around the finca grounds.

The staff also organize trips to various other areas, including trips to hike the surrounding volcanoes.

The food was very good quality, and not too pricey.

My only issue, which prevented this place from getting the full five stars has to do with the accomodation. Our group of three people rented the 02 bedroom cabin for four nights. The cabin was very nice, but, only one of the bedrooms had direct access to the bathroom, and only one had direct access to the entrance/exit of the cabin. Its not a massive issue, but if you want a wee at 3 am, you don't want to have to worry about waking up the other person in the other room, and likewise, if you want a bit of fresh air out on the terrace at night, you might have to tip-toe pass a sleeping being to get the door.

Very recommendable place, excellent service, so all in all, very much enjoyed my stay.

César and Marvin are truly some of the best hosts I have ever known. César speaks English and will help you with any questions you might have, and will go out of his way to accommodate nearly any request. Marvin is a superb chef and runs the place impeccably and with a smile. Both have interesting stories to tell and seem highly qualified to do just about anything.

Maybe the most telling part of our stay was my mom's 60th birthday dinner. Marvin and César knew that she was celebrating her birthday beforehand, and prepared an unforgettable dinner of steaks (prepared using Marvin's special wood fired method), Guapote (bass that we had caught earlier that day, prepared in banana leaves, cartocho-style), grilled veggies, mashed potatoes, and rice. The steak was the best I've ever had, and the rest of the meal was flawless. We brought our own bottles of wine, and shared some nice rum with Marvin and César when the meal was over. Marvin even brought birthday hats and balloons from Managua to decorate the place for my mom's b-day. And when dinner was finished, they brought out a cake and some ice cream that my aunt had called and arranged to have delivered with César. Again, possibly the most accommodating and gracious hosts you'll ever come across.

The only downside that I can think of is that the gnats are, well, plentiful. I think it was just the time of year--seems we arrived right when they all hatched. Aside from this, San Juan de la Isla is a lovely place to spend some time on Ometepe.

San Juan de La Isla is a special place, specially for those looking for a bit of peaceful time. The location right on the shores of Lake nIcaragua make this place have an enjoyable lake breeze. The food is outstanding, the service superb.

The only problem and i must say this is not evrybody that gets affected by this, is the amount of bugs and creatures that can creep up, lots of gnats sometimes but it is ok.

Ceasar and his staff get a gold star! We loved this place. Nestled on the coast, below one of the island's TWO volcanos, this finca-paradise is truly the place to be. We loved everything - the food was amazing (ate there two nights!), breakfasts were superb and the special Rum-snack menu offering was yummy. Thank you Ceasar, Marvin, Carolina and every other staff member for such a nice experience.

Room Tip: We brought a small rented car to the island... recommend leaving it at the ferry dock and arranging...

This was our second stay at Finca San Juan de la Isla. We arrived by ferry from San Carlos into Altagracia after midnite, and when we arrived at the Finca, both Marvin and Cesar were there to greet us w/ huge smiles. Cesar offered us beer and rum as a nightcap, and was not in a hurry to get back to bed.

Rooms are comfortable and spacious, and w/in earshot of the waves lapping at the shore of the lake. The bathroom is one of the largest I've seen anywhere in Nicaragua!

Both breakfasts were excellent, and Carolina made us a wonderful dinner one night.

There are hammocks spread around the property, so finding a comfortable place to relax and unwind is not difficult.

I run adventure trips and will look forward to returning to this lodging again!
