“Nice Hotel”
Reviewed March 15, 2011

I stayed in one of the cabanas for 3 nights in early March 2011 . The cabana was spacious and clean with a wonderful hot shower everyday. The staff was very friendly, helpful, accomodating and professsional. Marvin, Cesar and Ramon were very courteous, kind and made my stay very comfortable. The rest of the satff was also excellent but I do not remembe their names. The food at the hotel was also very good and plentiful. I didn't walk away from any meal feeling hungry.

The hotel and farm is pretty and pictoresque and there is a black sand beach on the lake in front of the hotel with nice views. The hotel is located in a remote area, but the hotel offers transportation to get around with a SUV (driver provided) and bicycles for rent. It is a very peaceful and tranquil place to visit.

The only thing that wasn't pleasant was the numerous small flying insects that happened to be all over the place during the time I stayed there. I heard that there are certain times of the year when these bugs are every where on the island. I wasn't aware of this ahead of time so initially it did scare me a bit, but then I got used to them. Of course, this is no poor reflection on the hotel itself, but simply something new to me and slightly uncomfortable.

I would recommend this hotel to others

We arrived to Ometepe by ferry and were picked up by transport to go to the hotel. it was a very nice ride, the island is beautiful. once arriving to the hotel we were greeted by Marvin and he showed us our room. it was perfect, plenty of space and the bathroom was clean and had everything. We stayed in Room #4, it was next to a big Terrace, that had a lot of space for sitting at night. the free WiFi was great for checking emails while having breakfast. The Chef, Marvin was great he would prepare traditional things from the island fresh everyday serving meals all day long. one day the hotel had planned a tour of the island for us with a private SUV, it was well worth taking. I can't wait to return to the hotel in the future, the staff was amazing and very friendly.

Words can't describe what a wonderful place this is...... When we first arrive to San Juan de la Isla we were a bit worried..... Boy were we wrong! This part of our trip was one of favorites! We decided to forgo the Waterfall tour that was scheduled for us and decided that we wanted to just relax and take in all the quietness it had to offer! Located on the shores of Lake Nicaragua, we were able to take long walks down the beach or just sit quietly and enjoy watching the Nicaraguan people. From the women doing their laundry on the rocks of the lake , to the young girls fishing ...... down the beach a ways further were several young teens playing baseball! Marvin was the best host ever. So Gracious and always ready to make sure we were comfortable. He took us for a long walk through the banana plantation..... Showing us all the different types of birds , spotting snakes, spiders and lizards! Way too cool! He then took us for a walk down the beach to a watermelon plantation. We felt so lucky to have such a person tour of this little secluded spot! Way better then any popular tour with a bunch of people! Marvin has got to be , hands down the best cook ever! Our steak dinner was to die for!! YUMMY! Our rooms were clean and comfortable with the best Hot showers ever!
Thanks Finca San Juan de la Isla for such great hospitality! and for making our stay so pleasurable!! ( we did do some touring of the Island, a must while visiting Nicaragua! )

My boyfriend and I just returned from Nicaragua a few days ago and I am missing the fantastic time we had at Finca San Juan de la Isla. Everything everyone has said in other reviews is true. It is paradise and it is remote. As we were driving through Nicaragua for about a week, we rented a car (with 4wd!) and brought it with us to Ometepe. For us, the car was crucial. We mostly took it easy, but we did get out to explore the island.

Marvin is amazing - he really made our trip special. He's a super-nice guy and a gracious host who put up with my mediocre Spanish. He also cooked us delicious meals. He set us up with a great guide (Neftali) who took us hiking on the volcano, then to a local rodeo and baseball game.

There is lots to do on Ometepe, but I will echo others in saying our favorite thing to do was nothing. There are hammocks and rocking chairs everywhere you look and the little beach right outside the fence is a perfect place for looking out at Lake Nicaragua.

There are bugs, for sure - bring bug spray. Or, take a lot of vitamin B1. It's worked for me, though I know others it hasn't worked for. If you really hate bugs and little lizards, don't go to Nicaragua.

We stayed in a cabin that wasn't attached to any other rooms and it was $90/night. That's not cheap for Nicaragua, but it was a great value. (and about 1/4 or the price of another place we looked at on the mainland...)

Our cabina was wonderful - beautiful tiled bathroom - the best hot water in any hotel anywhere - it had a lovely porch with hammock and chairs - also a great place for early morning yoga (self directed) - it sounded like a jungle outside our room in the morning and evening - the beach was non-existent, not like it was on the website because the lake was so high - this place is very isolated though and you need to pay for a driver to take you around and have him wait - the two drivers we had were great - the roads are very bad on the south part of the island and so is the long driveway/road into the finca. We were very lucky that the owner, Cesar, was there for a short time to tell us about a guide and a driver and what we could do in the area. If we had not met him, before he left for Managua we would have felt stranded. We did feel it was a bit of a bait and switch because I had corresponded with someone who spoke excellent English and also seemed like there would be a nice Christmas celebration - there was no Christmas tree or celebration planned - that person on the e-mails is not based at the finca and no one else spoke English - however we did do fine with our phrase book and the staff was wonderful - they tried their best to understand us and were very accomodating with all our requests - the food was good - we had a wonderful guide named Jose Antonio who took us on wonderful hikes and other activities - there was no internet access at the hotel

My three friends and I spent three days here. It was complete bliss. The hotel is reached via a winding bumpy road (completely normal for ometepe) through plaintain farms to the hotel which is at the edge of lake Nicaragua. Perfect location.

We were the only ones at the hotel during our stay and were treated wonderfully. It was the only place we stayed in that had hot water! The room was beautiful and had air conditioning as well. The food was amazing - we still talk about the fresh sqeezed juices - orange, passionfruit, papaya.
Tthe staff was very helpful and even escorted us on our hike to a waterfall.
My only caveat about the hotel is that if you are a backpacker only interested in a cheap room this is not the place for you. Ometepe has tons of backpacker hostels that are perfectly decent but this hotel is geared for travellors looking for a nicer experience.

I would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing vacation in beautiful surrroundings.

We were met at the ferry by San Juan staff and took an easy 30-minute drive to the finca (farm). (Ometepe roads have a rough reputation but this stretch of road is quite good). We were then greeted by the hotel owner (Caesar) who provided us a tour of the grounds and made us feel at home.

The adjacent marsh is a birder's paradise. Butterflies and other insects abound as well. The DW took a horse back ride to a nearby spring/swimming hole while I hiked some adjacent trails. The finca lies on Lake Nicaragua (safe to swim but not too inviting). There are not many other things to do here if you don't enjoy the outdoors... but it's still a wonderful place just to enjoy the shade, a rocking chair and a good book.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all EXCELLENT.
