An island in the middle of the largest lake in Central America with two volcanoes that you can hike! How do you not go check it out? The sunrises are epic, the sunsets are amazing. There is hiking, dirt biking, kayaking, swimming and just plain chilling out. The place has a very cool vibe and is the perfect spot to go and relax. There are a multitude of permaculture farms that have delicious food, it is extremely affordable and everyone is very friendly.

Highly recommended!

Isla Ometepe is a large island in a huge lake, Lago Nicaragua. It is an amazing place to visit and spend some time. The most obvious feature of the island is two volcanoes that form the island, Volcan Concepcion, which is active with a white plume of vapor and gas, and Volcan Maderas, which is dormant. Both volcanoes have hiking trails, the once on Maderas quite easy and shaded. The one we took led to a beautiful waterfall---San Ramon. The trail goes through a dense forest full of birds. There are wonderful beaches that make you forget that the island is in a lake not ocean. Very pleasant resorts and towns dot the island, making it easy to relax. The island has its own culture and people who live there prefer to do so rather than go to the "mainland". Highly recommended.

We enjoyed the whole place, it is pretty amazing to be between two big volcanos, seeing and experiencing nature. We enjoyed the museum and learning about Nicaraguan currency.

The fun begins as you approach the ferry landing in San Jorge, and you can see the twin volcanoes of the isla, smoke pouring from Concepcion. The trip across takes an hour+, through the cool, refreshing breeze and the kicked up chop from the wind. We landed in Moyogalpa where we spent two nights. We rented a scooter to explore the island, easily done in a day. The limited amount of paved road is in good shape, but beware the multitude of speed bumps! We first visited Charco Verde where you walk the paths through the varied ecosystem, from up a hill with a view over the lake, down through the jungle and to the shore. Nothing special. We then visited Playa Santo Domingo for lunch and to walk the beach. Afterward we continued to the end of the paved road and decided against going over the rough dirt road to visit the petroglyph rocks which we later heard was no great loss. Our favorite stop was Ojo de Agua, a natural spring in the jungle where we soaked in the refreshing water for a while and listened to the howler monkeys in the trees above. The best part was just cruising around, checking out the sights, and seeing the locals go about their daily business.

On my first visit to Nicaragua, my son and I went to Granada and San Juan del Sur. On my second visit recently, my husband and I went to Granada and then to Ometepe. I definitely would include Ometepe on any visit to Nicaragua! While it probably would not be the best choice if you are looking for an active nightlife, if you want to see the more quiet, rural or small village Nicaragua, Ometepe is a beautiful choice. We were not there long enough to do a lot of activities on this trip, but even for relaxing, it is a great destination, and I highly recommend it!
