Ometepe is super tranquil. The people are friendly and honest, and very laid back. The scenery was lush and beautiful. The petroglyphs and volcanoes add to the island's allure. I was sad that Lake Nicaragua was muddy and filled with algae, but the Ojo de Agua water hole helped!

This is a great destination for 2-3 days. I stayed in Santa Domingo, where you can stroll the beach, view the petroglyphs, and stay inexpensively. Most of the boats leave from Rivas and head to Moyogacalpa. Moyogocalpa is okay for a night, but not more. I wouldn't miss Isla de Ometepe.

By the way, for a quick overview of how to travel independently, see my guide QUIKGUIDE TO INDEPENDENT TRAVEL, which you can read in an evening. Just search for title in Amazon or Barnes and Noble. The guide is filled with tried and true methods used by seasoned independent travelers and covers everything from getting along with the locals, traveling in countries where you don't know the language, dealing with money, and avoiding trouble spots--doing it all with a smile.

Not many places in Nicaragua outside Granada and possibly Leon "get" tourism, but Omotepe does. The people are friendly, tourist-oriented and ready to please. The Canopy Tour was wonderful and our two guides superb at taking care of us.

We started out backpacking trip in Coasta Rica, first stop Isla Omemtepe! I have to say it is one of the most beautiful natural beautys that I have ever visited. The small Islands stands undeveloped with rocky roads, make shift homes, and loads of natural beauty.
Our first outting was to hike to the San Ramon water fall. It was about a 2hr hike, many others oppted to rent motor bikes, or horses could have definetly saved in time. I suggest to wear sneakers or hiking boots if your plannign on hikeing (we unfortunetly did not get the memo). The hike was hot, sweaty, and misrable being that we were making our way up in flip flops, but when finally making it to the water fall it was completeley magical! We hopped in for a dip in the refreshing water and took in the picturess scenery.
The next day we rented scooters which was SOOO MUCH FUN!! We took the scooters and made our way to Ojo Del Agua natural spring waters. It was amazing! The springs were located in the middle of an abundance of trees with ample seating to gaz and meditate on our natural surroundings.
Overall it was an amazing few days. If your making your way into Nicaragua I think you should definetly add Isla Ometepe to your itinerary.

Make sure you either rent a motorcycle of 4 wheel drive. The Island is huge. It takes about 1 hour in a car to make it from one side of the island to the other. 1/2 of the roads you need a 4 wheel drive to navagate - Awesome place
