“Great Little Place and Great People”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2013

Needed to stay here at very short notice, very friendly, comfortable, great service and food. Welcoming and warm, kept right on the service all the time and Dannielle was a star. When we left two items behind, she posted them back straight away. Interesting little village, and as a result its a hotel to be measured against.

Room Tip: Only saw one room, but Hotel throughout was a good standard. Nice bar, restraunt and no reason not t...

We go have been to the Thorn on numerous occasions to eat and generally love the food and ambience of the place. However, our visit with 4 other friends on Saturday was marred by the terrible service. After being seated we had to wait over 10 minutes for a drinks order to be taken. It was another 25 minutes before we were offered a menu to look at. Food when it arrived was very good, although a couple of the starters were barely warm. When this was mentioned to the waitress, the response was it is very busy. At the end of the evening when we had the bill, we patiently waited for 15 minutes for someone to take the money before having to ask a waitress to take the payment. On one final note, we noticed that in general visitors were not given a warm greeting or indeed a goodbye by anyone in the waiting team. In fact everyone leaving the restaurant did so without being acknowledged, or a goodbye & thanks for visiting said to them. We will visit again but it is these little touches that can make all the difference to an evening out.

We found this hotel in Sawdays and again another excellent find. It is situated in a village on the Stour estuary and I was a little sceptical of getting the promised river view after looking on Google earth & seeing how far back it was from the estuary but true to their description the view was stunning. I have never seen so many swans in one area before. The bar/restaurant was very comfortable and the staff were excellent. The menu was biased to fish and seafood but my husband found sufficient meat to eat. Breakfast was outstanding with a menu as big as the dinner menu! The room was very comfortable with many quirks, like the undulating floor. Fine to negotiate during the day but after a bottle of wine with dinner it became a little challenging!
A nice touch was the offer of fresh milk for our morning tea.
My only complaint (and it is really small) would be the quality of the loo paper.
We will definitely be returning.

Right from the start we had a warm welcome from Becky (in fact she had been helpful even before our arrival in advising of the best route from Daventry). Our room was very pretty and had lots of lovely homely touches, including a proper tea tray with homemade biscuits, a fantastic flat screen TV and the bathroom that just 'wow'.

We had dinner at the Mistley and it was fabulous and very good value, and after a lovely nights' sleep in lovely bedlinen, we enjoyed breakfast which was also fab, with the same excellent warm and friendly service we received at dinner the night before.

We were very impressed, and will be back to enjoy the hospitality during the spring so we can make the most of the beautiful coastline and views.

Well done the Mistley and well done Becky !

A worthwhile nightstop whilst travelling on business - room was warm, cosy & clean - staff and owner friendly and accommodating, despite going down late for breakfast! Am hoping for more trips to Mistley so I can stay again!

Spent last Sunday and Monday night here, lovely hotel ,lovely staff very very good food. Its on a busy road, so a bit of noise but probably cos it was a warm night and i had the window open !!
Only one little thing was that on the Monday night it was not so busy so less experienced staff were on duty ! they were ok but not as polished as the previous night = but it was ok
bit dodgy with the bill the next day as charged double but swiftly put right.
Would stay again if travelling this way but didnt think the area was worthy of a return visit, although very nice, especially as weather was so lovely

Room Tip: room 7 up top but lovely view

Stayed two nights in room no.1 which overlooks the estuary, although on the road it's not that busy at night
The seafood was superb particularly the oysters which I would recommend
Service was extremely attentive and always with a smile
Will stay again and again
