“A Little Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2013

We found this hotel in Sawdays and again another excellent find. It is situated in a village on the Stour estuary and I was a little sceptical of getting the promised river view after looking on Google earth & seeing how far back it was from the estuary but true to their description the view was stunning. I have never seen so many swans in one area before. The bar/restaurant was very comfortable and the staff were excellent. The menu was biased to fish and seafood but my husband found sufficient meat to eat. Breakfast was outstanding with a menu as big as the dinner menu! The room was very comfortable with many quirks, like the undulating floor. Fine to negotiate during the day but after a bottle of wine with dinner it became a little challenging!
A nice touch was the offer of fresh milk for our morning tea.
My only complaint (and it is really small) would be the quality of the loo paper.
We will definitely be returning.

Right from the start we had a warm welcome from Becky (in fact she had been helpful even before our arrival in advising of the best route from Daventry). Our room was very pretty and had lots of lovely homely touches, including a proper tea tray with homemade biscuits, a fantastic flat screen TV and the bathroom that just 'wow'.

We had dinner at the Mistley and it was fabulous and very good value, and after a lovely nights' sleep in lovely bedlinen, we enjoyed breakfast which was also fab, with the same excellent warm and friendly service we received at dinner the night before.

We were very impressed, and will be back to enjoy the hospitality during the spring so we can make the most of the beautiful coastline and views.

Well done the Mistley and well done Becky !

A worthwhile nightstop whilst travelling on business - room was warm, cosy & clean - staff and owner friendly and accommodating, despite going down late for breakfast! Am hoping for more trips to Mistley so I can stay again!

Spent last Sunday and Monday night here, lovely hotel ,lovely staff very very good food. Its on a busy road, so a bit of noise but probably cos it was a warm night and i had the window open !!
Only one little thing was that on the Monday night it was not so busy so less experienced staff were on duty ! they were ok but not as polished as the previous night = but it was ok
bit dodgy with the bill the next day as charged double but swiftly put right.
Would stay again if travelling this way but didnt think the area was worthy of a return visit, although very nice, especially as weather was so lovely

Room Tip: room 7 up top but lovely view

Stayed two nights in room no.1 which overlooks the estuary, although on the road it's not that busy at night
The seafood was superb particularly the oysters which I would recommend
Service was extremely attentive and always with a smile
Will stay again and again

Had a great stay, beautiful clean room. The room was huge, the bed was huge with plenty of pillows and a quilt to die for, Everything was covered, proper hair dryer, iron, ironing board, bathrobes etc, plus loads of little extras. Breakfast was a real treat plenty of variety not just your normal fry up, highly recommend the eggs benedict with smoked salmon and bucks fizz. The service was brilliant, would recommend to anyone,

We booked on Friday for the Sunday special (also applies on Mondays) and paid for a room with a view of the river at the front of the hotel. Mistley is very atmospheric - I think it would be an ideal film location with its Georgian houses and cottages and The River Stour backdrop. Our room overlooked the river and the swans nesting on the banks. This must have been a thriving little village in the past - now quite a few empty warehouses - waiting for refurbishment.

However the Mistley Thorn has been fully refurbished, decked in Farrow & Ball with a cosy feel. An inglenook firelace and oak beams. The menu is mainly fish - and what delicious fresh fish. If you are on the special D B & B deal you are offered a 321 menu Three courses for two people for one price £30 included in your deal. Or you can choose a la carte with a £30 allowance - which of course we chose - with such a lovely selection of dishes we ended up with Moules, and a lovely smoked mackerel Salad with beetroot as starters. The fish stew was perfect, tomatoey based and served with new potatoes. Seared cod came with peas bacon and onions all cooked to perfection. AS for the cheesecake....not to be missed - divine!

The roomy bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was huge with a very powerful shower.
Only niggle - if you are a light sleeper Monday morning traffic might disturb you. Large selection of cooked dishes for breakfast

We can highly recommend a nights' stay at The Mistley Thorn. The staff are friendly and efficient without being OTT - thank you for an enjoyable stay..
