“Relaxing Break”
Reviewed September 21, 2012

We had a lovely 2 night stay at the Mistley Thorn. It is a great pub/restaurant, nice feel and the staff were pleasant and helpful. The rooms were lovely! We stayed right at the top, room 7, and though the room was a bit smaller than most the bathroom was very large. Good bed linen, comfortable beds, wonderful shower and everything you could want in a room, toiletries, iron/ironingboard, hairdryer, tea/coffee making facilities. It was extremely hot on the Sunday but we had an excellent fan in the room. Clean and comfortable. Reminded me of a North Norfolk hotel. On the second afternoon, there was a very strong smell of cooking in the room but we had the windows open and it didn't last for long.
The food was good and we played cards after dinner. We were made to feel very welcome and even told we could stay in the bar after closing to continue our game.
The only negative for us was that the menu was a little limited, okay for the first night but when we had to choose on the second night it was difficult to find something different, in fact, two of us had exactly the same dinner on the both nights! The locals menu is marked with the day and date and obviously changed each day, but the choice of food is the same, no change! We couldn't have eaten there a third night.
All in all, we had a great stay, loved the rooms, loved Mistley, had nice staff, was a very reasonably priced deal, as we enjoyed the area.
We would certainly recommend the hotel to friends and family.

We stayed here before leaving for a cruise in Harwich. We spent one very lovely night.

The town of Mistley is very small , but big on charm. Our children loved seeing the swans and the old trees. The stories of the witch hunter fascinated them.

The hotel is very small , but chic. Nice beds and very tasteful decor , loads of personality. The breakfast was quite delicious and we really enjoyed our dinner there.Everyone was very welcoming and kind.

My middle son declares Mistley to be one of his favorite palces and he ´s visited almost 25 countries!

I was taken here for my birthday weekend as a special treat from my boyfriend and would like to share with you my experiences:

(1) The Welcome

- A lukewarm reception and no offer of helping me carry my bags to the room.

(2) The bedroom

- Although "Farrow and Ball", the paint colours in the room were very dark and gave the room a dingy feel. It also was on top of the kitchen and there was, therefore, noise (you have to open the windows as there is no A.C) so I didn't sleep very well.

(3) The Restaurant

- Very rushed service and inattentive staff. The food was ok but the ambience lead me to have an unpleasant dining experience.

For these reasons...I would not recommend this to a friend.

This review is from the same party who wrote 'rooms are an afterthought' (July 8th). Please see the management response to that review. This party has written two earlier reviews also based on the same visit that have been removed by Trip Advisor as violating guidelines. The present review is effectively a reply to my management response - note reference to Farrow and Ball paint.

We made an impromtu stop at this restaurant on our way home from a day at the coast. We were really impressed by the kind and efficient service. The childrens menu was not an after thought with poor quality food as in so many places. My 4 year old had fish and chips that included hand cut chips which were really good.
The locals menu was excellent. The food was imaginative and there was real attention to detail such as really fresh salad leaves with my tart and homemade biscuits with the creme brulee. I thought it was good value too.
We would highly reccomend this place. A great find.

We had an unexpected few days without the family and booked dinner, bed and breakfast at the Mistley Thorn on the basis of the good reviews online. The service from all the staff was friendly and helpful. Our room (no.2) was spacious and comfortable with good views of the Stour (in between buildings). As the hotel is on the road, we were not surprised by some traffic noise. Dinner was tasty both nights with a good choice of mainly fish dishes - well cooked and presented - and we enjoyed all the wines we tried. Breakfast was equally tasty and varied. We thought it was good value for money all round. Mistley itself is a quirky and interesting place - small with historic buildings and a run-down quay. We used it as a base to explore the Beth Chatto garden, the Alfred Munnings museum, Harwich, Flatford Mill and Constable country, and the pretty villages in Suffolk on the way home via Sudbury. We will definitely recommend this to friends and try to return.

Room Tip: We enjoyed room 2 at the front with views of the Stour - light sleepers might be disturbed by traffi...

Came across The Mistly Thorn by accident on Trip Advisor. How glad am I that I did?
Spent two lovely days here. Food Is very good, well presented, well priced and good sized portions. Service was very good with attentive and helpful staff.
Our room was Immaculate, bathroom had a nice big bath with a great power shower.
Nice views over the river made this a perfect setting.
Shall definately be going back.

Booked this restaurant with rooms after looking on Trip Advisor and were not disappointed. Really good welcome, lovely spacious room with views over the river and such good food both for dinner and for breakfast. The level of service throughout our stay was very friendly and attentive. It seemed that nothing was too much trouble.

Thye do a special deal for Sunday and Monday which is terrific value, but even the full priced night is still real value for money.

The menu for breakfast and dinner is very imaginative, good sized portions, well served even when the restaurant was very busy, and beautifully cooked and presented.

The Mistley Thorn was a wonderful find for us and we would not look anywhere else when we return to that part of Essex.

Room Tip: Rooms with river view are large and very comfortable
