Met friends here for an evening out, drank in the bar and ate in the restaurant, the veggie curry was fantastic, great food and service overall and the building itself is lovely, we'll definitely be returning.

My wife and I stayed at this lovely hotel for our Ruby wedding anniversary in November 2012.
The hotel is immaculate, food great and staff without exception very efficient, warm and friendly.
We had a "superior" room (206) which was beautiful and included his and hers bath robes, it had a huge ensuite with both roll top bath and corner shower with fresh towels every day. We had a great time and to make things even better there was a deal whereby if you paid for 2 nights you got the 3rd free (with the proviso that you ate in their restaurant on 2 evenings),this was no problem anyway as the food was reasonably priced and was of very good quality, if you are a steak or curry lover, there are also special mid week deals.
Allin all a lovely experience, we would not hesitate to book the Downe Arms again.

My husband and I have just returned from a 2 night stay at the Downe Arms, celebrating our first wedding Anniversary. From the second we set foot in the beautifully presented hotel we were looked after superbly, our room (206) was beautiful and welcoming, with chilled champagne and chocolates waiting for us (which my husband had prearranged with the hotel). We had a lovely spacious bathroom with a corner shower and the largest roll top stand alone bath i have seen or been in and the comfiest bed which i wanted to take home. Our table was waiting for us when we went for our first evening meal and the waitress was so friendly and helpful, particularly when we had difficulty choosing from the mouth watering menu, nothing was too much trouble and our meal surpassed all expectations. We moved into the Tuckers Bar to relax with a couple of nightcaps and to listen to great live music.
We had chosen to have full english breakfast in our room on both the mornings which was arranged with ease the evening before, it was delicious and certainly set us up for the day. We had a full day exploring the stunning countryside, moors and wildlife, before returning to the hotel and languishing in a huge bubble bath before going down to our candlelit meal, once again the waitress (a different young lady) couldn't do enough for us, we had yet another fabulous meal and again moved into the Tuckers Bar and finished the evening relaxing infront of the open fire in the cosy lounge area. We very reluctantly left the next morning to spend the afternoon at nearby Robin Hoods Bay, but not before we had a lovely chat with the owners. Their hotel and staff are a credit to them. We cannot wait to return and are planning our next stay as we speak (in Room 206 - of course). Thank you.

Just back from an overnight stay at The Downe arms. As per the previous review we also stayed in room 202.
We found it great value for money and had a lovely stay.
We did use the lounge area as it was really comfortable and the log fire made it very welcoming.
We found the whole hotel lovely with the staff a credit to it. Every member of staff we dealt with had a smile, and clearly enjoyed working at the hotel. The service throughout was of the highest order.
From the fist minute when we arrived to the minute we left was a joy and we will definitely be returning.
A big thank you to everyone at The Downe Arms Hotel.

As with previous reviews I will try to be honest and constructive so hopefully being helpful to other readers.
I booked the hotel direct and paid £186 for 3 nights Sunday to Wednesday in a 4 poster superior room.On this deal we needed to eat in the hotel on 2 occasions. We did not have the best start to the break. On arrival the large car park was completely full (due to two large functions) so had to wait 10 min for a place to become available but I guess hotels need this business and cannot be expected to turn it away, so a couple of guest can park straight away. The building is very impressive in York stone. Check in was carried out by a very busy owner who straight away apologised for the parking. I informed him that we had booked a table for the carvery at 1-30; I could tell by the look on his face that we had a problem. The carvery had been cancelled due to the functions. Again he was very apologetic and said they would make sure we had a roast lunch and asked us to go through to the bar at 1-30.We then had by far the best Sunday lunch we have eaten in a long time, fantastic service.
Room 202 4 poster superior
Based on the first floor just on the side of the original building. A very large room with large flat screen TV ( 32” plus ) large wardrobe two bucket chairs, dressing table, drinks tray , 2 large windows, and plenty of drawer space. The furnishings and décor were very nice and spotlessly clean, we did not have any issues with the road noise, I think due to the double glazing, yes, the church bells can be just heard but not to the point of being a problem. The bathroom, to be honest was modern and clean but very small and I am not sure this is any one’s fault it’s just the way the building was built. We had no problems with hot water. The water pressure won’t knock you off your feet in the shower but again it serves its purpose but not the room’s strongest area.
Lounge and restaurant area.
A small lounge is attached to the restaurant area and looks very comfy and relaxing. We did not use this area and because the hotel did not seem full, this area was very quiet and lacked any atmosphere.
The restaurant was modern, clean and nicely decorated, again apart from breakfast we did not eat in here because again due to numbers did not have the atmosphere the bar area did.
Food
Breakfast was as good if not better than I have eaten in any of the major chains i.e. Hilton De vere. We were provided with a menu, ok, not the biggest choice in the world but cereals, fruit juices some fruit, full English, kippers, more than enough. Also they allow you to design your own menu. The staff are very present and accommodating .Excellent start to the day and filling. The evening menu can be taken either in the restaurant or in Tuckers bar. The menu looked varied and of average price .We had soup and sandwiches one night which was plentiful and good value at £18 for two.

Tuckers bar
This can be entered through a door from the restaurant/lounge area and was a a firm favourite of ours. A lovely country feel to the place with beams, stone floors, and a warm décor. Tuesday is steak night and is worth every penny. Rump steaks, onion rings, mushrooms, tomatoes, and handcut chips for two people £15 and everything of high quality. The bar has a really nice atmosphere with a mix of locals and residents. And again I must mention the staff at the hotel are probably some of the friendliest people we have come across working in hotels.
To some up
Excellent hotel , with great staff and food .

Areas which I think could further improve the hotel
I don’t think plastic cups in bedrooms for water give the best impression.
Towels could be larger in bathrooms
Mug type cups at breakfast would be better than small cups
Update information pack in bedroom (old menu)

Thanks to both staff and owners for lovely short break

Room Tip: Room 202 was vary nice Speak to hotel thay will be vary helpful.
