“Nice food but a bit rushed to start with”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 29, 2013

Visited the Kings Arms on a busy Friday of the whitsun bank holiday.
Really good rooms and lovely restaurant. Had a great meal (try the 'Jospered' dishes they are fantastic).
Only criticism is that we had booked a table for 19:30 but came in earlier for a drink - sat at a table in the bar (not laid up for dinner) but then the staff rushed us through to the dining room, so that we ended up eating earlier than we would have preferred. The main course came very quickly after the starter. However, we were then able to stay at our table for the rest of the evening. They are not really geared up for pre-dinner drinks - they are so busy that every table is needed for diners. But we would definitely go again as the food is so good.

The room, restaurant, staff, and location were all very good. The owner/managers were very friendly and accommodating to all patrons, even when it was very busy. We wish them all the best going forward.

I stayed here recently while dropping a friend to Sherborne School. This hotel was simply brilliant... one of the best small hotels I have stayed at recently. The staff was service oriented while remaining genuinely personal and I honestly felt like I was at home for the day and a night I spent there.

The hotel has been freshly renovated and it shows! Rooms were delightfully and individually decorated with updated bathrooms and free WiFi to boot. After a quick drink at the delightful lobby bar we dined in the superb restaurant with top notch food from a great selection of dishes. Breakfast the next morning was no less excellent with a simple buffet for fruits and cereals and English breakfasts cooked to order.

There is simply nothing wrong with this hotel... don't debate it... book today :).

Happy traveling!
Ben

Room Tip: Go for the king/queen sized bed... the doubles room is VERY cozy :).

Wife had a "special" birthday. Arrived on Sunday Pleasant lady, super room ( topaz). Had a relaxing time under the rain shower - the wet rooms are really super- then Dinner!
We approved of the way the kitchen is in full view and was spotless - if the cooks were not preparing the poor souls were scrubbing the place spotless. Dinner was excellent as was the breakfast the next morning - we grade our stays in hotels by the quality of the scrambled eggs at breakfast , wife being somewhat picky about her scrambled eggs,, We graded the breakfast 10 out of 10 - only reached by another hotel in this country ( we are talking the Old Coastguards at Mousehole last year)
Super friendly staff who went out of their way to make our stay pleasant. It comes down to a couple of simple questions would I stay there again ( see above) and would I recommend the hotel to others . We have and we will .
For a couple of hard working consultants that need(ed) a quiet day or two away the KIngs Arms ticked all the right boxes. Pleasant efficient staff, clean unfussy rooms , excellent food .
We will be back and no doubt friends , family and work aquaintances will be heading to Charlton Horethorne to savor the delight of The Kings Arms

Room Tip: The rooms at the rear are quieter , rooms in the front are brighter with a view over the Valley BTW...

We enjoyed our first visit so much we reconvened for a second.

Lovely food, great service (with a smile) from booking to departure, clean spacious room (Crystal this time), property kept in tip top condition.

Love the art work adorning the walls and only sad most of the "cow" display has either been either purchased or replaced - please don't let the large one in the bar go! Enchanting, unusual and memorable!

See you again for our next reunion!

Room Tip: I have seen inside about 4 so far and all equally as nice

Thank you for taking the time to complete a review and so pleased that your second visit to us meet your expectations; we are always delighted when our customers rate our service and food highly - along with that all important smile!

The arrival of 'Primrose' (the cow artwork) has been much talked about since her arrival in the bar! We hope that she will stay with us for a while and whilst others have moved to pastures new, we are sure that others from the rest of the herd will join us soon.

Looking forward to seeing you all again soon.

Best regards

Mike and the rest of the team.

Went here hoping for a special 31st anniversary dinner after reading so many good reviews. Arrived 7.40 for table booked for 8pm and directed to wait in 'snug' with drinks before being seated. We waited politely until 8.15 before my wife asked if our table was ready. The staff looked confused why we'd sked and immediately directed us into the dining room which was not at all full. It was confusing as we felt neglected and thought they were stalling for 40 minutes while our table became free? Our order was taken by a pleasant young lady who seemed to be a little unsure of herself and when asked she assured me that the duck was crispy but it wasn't. We weren't asked our potato choice and I had to go and check. Our starter was tasty but small for the price. My main was tasty despite the slightly soggy duck. My wife felt that her steak was small for a Rib Eye and it tasted quite average. Overall, we felt that the food was a mixed bag, the service was disappointing and despite mentioning that it was our anniversary (no we weren't looking for a free drink) this wasn't even acknowledged by the person I assume was the manager or owner although they never introduced themselves so I'm not sure. For a meal that cost £100 we expected better; perhaps we caught them on an off night but we only get one 31st anniversary.

We eat regularly at the Kings Arms and have always enjoyed excellent food and a very warm friendly welcome with impeccable service. For this reason I decided to hold my 40th Birthday celebrations here. I had 40 guests so was given exclusive use of the restaurant area (there is also a bar area which serves food) All arrangements were competently organised by Wendy the functions manager taking most of the stress away from myself.
The three course meal was up to their usual excellent standard as was the service. My guests made a point of commenting not only on the superb food but also on the friendly relaxed atmosphere. Many said they would be returning to eat here themselves. We capped this off by staying the night in one of their lovely rooms and a very welcome breakfast the following morning.
Overall I would highly recommend The Kings Arms whether it’s just for a lunch time or evening meal or as a function venue. Tony and his wife Sarah, who is the chef, will be there ready to give you a warm welcome.
