“Lovely setting, impressive spa”
Reviewed August 14, 2008

Stayed here for a weekend break with my boyfriend. It's not really a castle but rather a modern hotel with remains of a castle (somewhere) on the grounds. The rooms are really nice, quite modern and stylish. We were situated on the ground floor and I could hear people walking past etc and didn't feel 100% private in the room. Had booked a treatment at the SPA and this was really impressive. There is a great "relax" room you can go to and help yourself to herbal teas. I fell asleep there, it was great. The treatment itself (massage) was good, very relaxing.

The hotel is a bit out from Sligo, so you have to get a taxi in if you want to go out for dinner. it's not too far though. The staff in the hotel were nice. Thought the place was a bit expensive for what it was (190 euro per night). It's probably more suited to golfers as there is apparently a good golf course there.

However, it was a nice place and I would recommend it, but if I was going back to Sligo would probably try to stay in the town.

Wow - an amazing experience.

Had our wedding reception in Castle Dargan last year and should have given a review then!! I couldn't have been happier - the staff were fanatastic from day one.

Having booked the hotel when it was still a building site - I was a little nervous about the wole day but any reservations were unfounded. We had supurb help in the planning and preparation and on the day the staff really pulled out all the stops - I have never seen a meal served as well, before or since (this is also something a guest who has worked in hotels for about 15 years commented on). I really could not fault any of the staff in ay way.

The food at the reception was amazing quality. The room service breakfast was also lovely and I have never know so many people to comment about the comfort of the beds!!!!

Yes the decor in the restaurant & bar are plain . . . . but that's the point - the golf course is the decor - it's the view they are maximising on. Personally I have no interest in golf but the view is lovely.

This modern hotel is off the main road but is easy to find. Parking is right opposite the courtyard where you walk through to reception. We received a warm, if slightly efficient, welcome and were pleased with the room which was on the ground floor overlooking the courtyard. It was comfortable, clean and well appointed. We were late arriving so no food was available but were helpfully directed to a takeaway in the town centre which unfortunately was rubbish.

Bath facilities included robes and quality toiletries although the bathroom did smell a bit musty. Walls between rooms were solid so we couldn't hear anyone else and hopefully weren't heard ourselves! Breakfast was served at our table overlooking the golf course in quality crockery and on crisp linen and was well cooked. More toast was cheerfully provided by our non-Irish waiter who was attentive and pleasant.

All in all, a lovely one-night stay and the best-value hotel of our trip to Ireland at 79 euros or £63.00!

This was our third stay at the Castle Dargan and each visit was a very different experience. This time we were staying in the hotel on the same weekend as a wedding party and it certainly negatively effected the service. We booked a couples spa weekend as advertised on their website. However, we booked over the phone and the staff didn't seem to sure about the offer and even had to ask me how much it cost! We arrived early in order to have our spa treatments, and to be fair, the gave us breakfast even though we hadn't checked in. The Icon spa was very well furnished and we were both delighted with the treatments and the spa staff were very friendly. As other reviewers have commented, there is a serious lack of atmosphere in the bar and the restaurant, and the restaurant is very small, more like that of a B& B, even though it does have nice views of the golf course. The meal was nice, but the service took away from it. It wasn't awful slow - i've seen worse - it just seemed a bit chaotic. I can't put my finger on it but it just seemed a bit unprofessional. They must know this themselves as they didn't charge my wife for her glass of wine "as the service was a bit slow". So at least they recognise the problem. The room was nice, no problems with heat, in fact it was a little warm due to the weather but an open window easily soled that one. The pressure in the shower was pathetic. This isn't a problem I remember during our previous 2 stays but it's not what you expect from a 4 star hotel in any room. The hotel is very well furnished throughout, especially the lounge areas. Upon checkout we were charged for the spa treatments which were supposed to be included in the price. I suspected this might happen from talking to the girl on the phone when i booked, and in the spa we also had to explain that the treatments were included. Now the bill was corrected, no questions asked, but the left hand didn't seam to know what the right hand was doing in this respect. In all its a lovely hotel, and we've enjoyed very pleasant stays in the past, but the service staff (spa excluded) needs, well, a pep talk might be the nice way of putting it! Avoid if there's a wedding on.

Would say it is a three star Hotel at best. Don't know where they got the Castle part in their name.

Stayed there for two nights and found it to be ok.
Sevice was very good and the staff were very polite.

We ate in the restuarant on arrival as it was part of the deal. Food and selection was ok, nothing spectacular.
The service was very good, but food arrived very slowly. Menu was quite pricey.

The breakfast was the usual buffet and pretty standard stuff, no frills. We do not eat red meat and the
fresh fruit selection was very poor. What little they did have seemd to be out of a tin.

The bar area is quite strange in that it lacks any atmosphere. The views of the golf course are good,
but if it were not for the golf course views, the bar and retaurant would be really ordinary.
The decor in both is dodgy.

The hotel bedroom was large and and ensuite was a great size. TV channels number about seven and picture is bad.
Same for bar area, terrible reception.

There was a bit of a sewerage smell at certain times in one of the corridors to the room.
Thought we were imagining this until we saw other comments posted here.

The golf course is the main attraction for this hotel as with no leisure centre there is little to do apart from
the Spa. Given its distance from Sligo town too it is a bit remote.

Would we go there again...only if we were attending a wedding or on a golf weekend perhaps.

  • Liked — Good size room and ensuite
  • Disliked — Bit boring , no atmosphere.

I stayed there for the weekend with my gf! the hotel looks good and reception was very helpful at check-in! room woz nice with very comfortable large bed! breakfast woz good but full irish is very small and not very filling! bar food woz very good and service was good but bar manager seemed power mad, barking out orders in front of customers and generally sour faced! restaurant was a differant story, the food was horrible and the menu very limited, in fact didnt like anything on it, portions very small as well!
on the saturday i sat down to watch a match at the bar and the reception was dreadful and eventually went, so no match at all on sky, very dissappointed! spa had only nothing avalible at all during the stay so cant comment on dat! no leisure centre at all, it's a 4 star hotel thought dat was as standard these days!

We have just returned from a weekend at the Castle Dargan. I booked the weekend as a valentines present for my husband. We hoped to have a romantic weekend. We arrived on friday evening and after checking in made our way to our walled garden suite which was like an ice box. Once we located the temperture gauge, the suite still took over an hour to heat up. We went to the middleton bar for some food. The food was adequate but the bar lack atmosphere. It was like the Marie Celeste. The following morning we went for breakfast at 9.50am. The dinning room was like a circus. The waiting staff were tripping over each other, yet nobody seem capable of taking an order and presenting it correctly. After waiting half an hour i got up and asked a waitress for a cooked breakfast, within five minutes a breakfast was placed in front of my husband, 30 seconds later the breakfast was picked up again by another waiter and given to another table. This happened in the dining room three times while we waited patiently for our breakfasts. After spending the day in Sligo town, we returned to our suite to get changed for the evening. The was an altercation in the room below us, we reported the incident to the reception, who seemed to deal with it promptly. However, had we both not been drinking we would have returned home that evening. Following the uncomfortable position we had found ourselves in we once again chose to eat in the middleton bar and again it lacked atmosphere. There were three other couples in the bar, all of whom left early. We were delighted to check out on Sunday morning and will never return to this Hotel. It is over rated and is only suitable for people interested in Golf. The staff all need training in how to deal with the people. They lack motivation, enthusiasm and knowledge of customer relations.
