we were at a wedding on 18th may this year, and with the cost and description my initial picture in my head was sadly not what I saw on arrival.
it did not look like the impression of a castle I had in my mind compared to other castles I have had the pleasure to view in that area.
bearing in mind the price and limitations my stepson was given it is not a venue I personally would choose for such an event, although the service and food was good and hot, the bar could do with some up grading especially the lagers, they had only one draught lager on.
I always try to give good reports but on this occasion I am sorry to say that this is the best I can give

We attended a very special friends wedding here in April and after the long journey the view of the castle was a very beautiful and welcome sight. I had the Wedding cake in my car and as it was the first warm day of the year the welcome from the owner was lovely as he helped me put the cake somewhere safe and cool before the big day.
on entry to our room we used the bathroom only to find the sink didn't drain properly, i mentioned this to the owner and he immediately carried out whatever needed to be done to ensure the sink was working properly and said that if he couldn't repair the sink he would change our room to ensure we had the best stay possible. the sink was an easy fix yet he still gave us a round of complementary drink by way of apology which was totally unnecessary. But thank you :)
The only negative i would have would be that the hotel is cash only which meant we had to draw more than we would maybe have normally and then had to pay it back in after the event, however the whole weekend was lovely and made very pleasant by the owner and staff.
The wedding ran smoothly and was a beautiful day, if a little cold, but you cant help the weather. would definitely recommended this venue to others

Room Tip: you can hear through the walls slightly in some of the rooms in the annex but it wouldn't put me...

We had our wedding here on the 30 March 2013. We booked this venue without viewing it and I have no regrets at all. The whole weekend from the moment we arrived until the minute we left was absolutely perfect. All our family and friends have commented on what a wonderful weekend they had. The hotel is absolutely amazing and the grounds and surroundings are beautiful. Glen and his team were fantastic. Glen ensured that all the guest were where they were supposed to be at the correct times and that our day ran to perfectection and everything was just so precise. The food was fantastic and the portion sizes were very generous. I don't think we could have wished for a better wedding day and weekend than what we had at Auchen Castle. Big thanks to Glen and his team.

We stayed here for a friends wedding, they took over the whole hotel. So the wedding party were the only guests.
When we arrived we were in awe of the place, it is so grand. The grounds are amazing and the hotel is breath taking. We enjoyed a fantastic weekend here, the wedding was arranged to precision and the food was exceptional. Our room wasn't the highest price room £169 and on it's own it wouldn't have been good value, but as a package (with the hotel) it served it's purpose. I can say you're not just paying for B&B you are paying for the whole experience. My only complaint is there wasn't a shower. But everything else was perfect.

We have just returned from the wedding of our dear friends here. First of all the positives: the wedding hosting was fabulous and the wedding food was some of the best I have tasted. We thoroughly enjoyed the ceremony and the reception into the evening. However there were lots of negatives in my opinion related to this hotel firstly the owner was not welcoming in any way and almost read us a rule book on our arrival! He insisted on telling is this was not a 'hotel' it was a function venue, I would point out his roadside signage begs to differ!
Rooms standards were in no way in line with the price per night. Our room was very small bearing in mind they knew we were coming with a child, the hearing was running constantly and as a result the room was baking! Add to this there was no way of keeping our window open! To add insult to injury for our sweaty selves the shower did not work at all in the room either!
So in summary ... The venue was very attractive and the team are clearly very adept at handling weddings and the day ran very smoothly with excellent catering to boot however the rooms and owner's manner let this venue down. The price per night is not warranted based on standard of rooms.

Thank you for your kind words about the venue, food and hosting. I'm afraid the road signage is put up by the scottish tourist board and although they are aware we've been a function only venue for over 2 years, they have not yet updated their road signs. The bride and groom assigned which rooms their guests received on this occasion. The heating can be altered in the rooms and the shower was working as far as we can ascertain but if any concerns had been raised at the time we would of course have assisted you on both accounts. We're very sorry to hear you're experience wasn't as good as you felt it should have been and wish we had been alerted to these troubles at the time so we could have resolved them for you.

We got married at Auchen Castle on 19th June 2012 and it was the perfect day. We did not have any guests and did it all ourselves in 4 weeks from 13th May. The agency was brilliant and everything went like a dream. We had not seen the castle when we booked, so the day before did our trial run. We called up on the off chance and were met by Glenn, who could not have been more helpful and accommodating, in showing us around and answering any questions. We had complete confidence that everyhting was in hand and that we would be looked after well. We were and the day was beautiful. Nice weather, and when we arrived Glenn met us and organised for Lance to have his training for the Owl ring delivery. The registrar Elizabeth was lovely. Glenn could tell I was nervous and was very reasurrring and supportoive.

We were not rushed afterwards as we wondered around the grounds to have our photos taken and after we had completed everything and ready to go back to our hotel, Glenn came to say goodbye.

I have to say we felt we were treated very well and no matter how many guests we had, if that was what we had chosen, we feel they would have been given the same treatment.

It was a fairytale wedding and the most fantastic day - one we both treasure and we have some beautiful photos when we want to remind oursleves of the enjoyment we had. Doen't every girl want to get married in a beautiful castle with a handsome prince!!

Thank you to everyone involved for making our day so special.

Seona and Lance Douglas

We had our wedding here on 27th Oct 2012 and although we had quite a few misgivings to begin with our weekend couldnt have been better and we had an absolute ball.
To begin with, we booked the hotel without viewing first. If we had visited and received the lack of respect that we did on our only visit prior to the wedding we would not have booked our wedding at this venue. We were dealing with one person at Auchen throughout, the main wedding co-ordinator.
To begin with when we booked we were asked for deposits from our wedding guests. As our wedding was 10months away it was alot to ask of our guests to cough up for deposits and make decisions to stay that far in advance. Exact meal orders had to be taken for the wedding and if our group had wanted to eat in the hotel on the night prior to the wedding it also would had to have been ordered and paid for in advance. As it was, we went into Moffat on the Friday evening and The Black Bull was more than accommodating for food and drink!
During our visit in May I almost felt that we were unwelcome, as if they were doing US a favour by showing us around the castle (even though we had already paid a substantial amount of money for rooms and food/drink). I had asked before our visit if we could have a sample menu, as it is the norm for wedding venues to provide a sample menu so the bride & groom can make their choices etc and unfortunately I was told that they did not have a chef on full time, only for weddings and we could not expect the hotel to accommodate every couple that came through the doors with sample menus!! I was more than a bit taken aback but we still went ahead. The visit was fine, and it was a beautiful day, sun shining and although the castle was not cleaned up after a wedding the previous day we still loved the venue and whatever misgivings we had previously were blown away.
When we booked our wedding we were the only wedding that weekend and as far as we knew we had the pick of the rooms. The next thing a knew we were being contacted to say that we needed to decide our room and guest allocation as the other wedding was picking their rooms .. we didnt know anything about another wedding being booked the same day after we had booked! As the rooms were expensive and there were B&Bs in Moffat we only provisionally booked 10 rooms but it turned out we needed 18 .. and were consequentially told we could only get 11. This was just what we did not need, trying to pick and choose who stays in the castle and pacify guests for a wedding 10 months away. I did contact the wedding bureau about various issues as we had booked through them but to be honest they didnt seem interested. They did little else to relieve our misgivings and simply said that staff were excellent and that if they had free rooms then they would book another wedding without regard or even contacting a wedding already booked if they had not paid to book the whole hotel privately.
when we booked we were told the 1st July 2012 the price of the rooms was increasing in price and we had agreed with management that if the room totals was paid by then our guests would get the cheaper price, same with food & drink. HOWEVER. It was at this time that the Ulster bank had shut down and this was who we bank with so although the money was in the account we could not access it. It had been made extremely clear to us and was even said that once the 1st July came the computer systems automatically changed to the higher price and there was nothin that staff could do and we would be charged the higer price. So we tried to contact the castle and reached a staff member that was only able to tell us that management was dealing with another wedding and not available and could not allay any fears over our money .. We could have paid them directly into their bank account if we got their account number and sort code etc but they would not allow this. To cut a long story short, a close family member eventually got through to management who was more than rude: he assumed that she was ME the bride and spoke to her as if she was a child being told off at school, completely and utterly crossed the line with her, told her that our wedding was not important to him as it was not that day, that he was dealing with another wedding and that was all that was concerning him that day, that she had no right to ring him repeatedly when he was otherwise engaged and completely talked over her and cut her of through the conversation. Fortunately, she has quite a sharp tongue! She pointed out that he had told us we would be charged higher rates and that we were contacting him to pay the balance only the problem with the bank were delaying us. Im not sure if he ever realised he wasnt speaking to me that day!
Very shocking indeed, I have never heard of a wedding venue giving the impression that THEY are doing the bride and groom a favour by allowing them to use their venue. We were paying them to provide a service, they should have been a whole lot more respectful especially as it is not one of the cheaper venues around. Manners cost nothing and lack of respect, condescendation, ignorance and arrogance almost cost them our wedding.
However, in saying all of that, when we did arrive for our wedding it was so relaxed, the staff were there if needed but they were in the background, it was as if we had the place to ourselves. The food was first class, the rooms were clean and very comfortable, couldnt have been better. Grounds were nice enough considering it was Oct and pics turned out great. Great atmosphere but I always think its the people that make a wedding and in this case it was true. One thing I will say i was a bit let down by was the fact that the bar ran out of alcohol .. It wasnt a large wedding but im sure they will be better stocked for an Irish wedding in future!

Room Tip: Room 28 was our bridal suite, sitauted a bit far from the main recpetion rooms but we could use the...
