“Beautiful retreat”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2012

My husband myself and daughter spent 3 nights here and it wa a lovely relaxing time after a rather hectic Europe trip. the rooms are comfortable and differ in size and furnishing. I would suggest that anyone staying here be sure of the room assigned to them. We had two nterleading rooms but only one bathroom and one set of hanging wardrobes. This is fine as long as you are aware of what to expect. Be sure to take a bottle of wine and some nibbles as the gardens offer a wonderfull relaxed area to sit and ponder.
The breakfast is basic with lovely pastries and jam every morning.

Room Tip: Be specific about your requirements.

This chateau is gorgeous and completely restored into comfortable 21st century living. We had a large room with a lovely view out onto the terrace and hills beyond, where a horse was picturesquely grazing. While relaxing in the common room, complete with antique fireplace, we felt like the noble family of the palace. One evening we bought fruit, cheese & wine, and enjoyed a picnic on the spacious grounds. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom was attractive, and the service was mostly invisible but always available and willing.

Tip--visit the pool even if you don't swim. There is a cool underground tunnel/wine room that accesses the pool. It feels like a trip back in time--in fact, we were told that it is the oldest part of the castle--probably dating to medieval times.

Only minor complaint was the lack of fresh fruit at breakfast. Packaged fruit cups don't really seem up to the quality of this hotel.

The room had no heating. The room service was bad. Breakfast was horrible. The hotel is not suitable for being a 5 star hotel.

By far the highlight of our recent trip to Amsterdam, Belgium, and France was our three nights stay at the Chateau des Arpentis. We had found this place mentioned in Rick Steves, visited their website, and then read the reviews here on TripAdvisor. Actually we were there the same time as "sugfrombuffalo".

We arrived after a rainy day of driving from the Brittany area and Olivier welcomed us when we arrived early in the afternoon. Rooms were not yet ready so he directed us to nearby Amboise so that we could catch a quick lunch. When we returned he offered all of us (we were traveling with another couple) a number of different rooms. The first would have been fine by us (don't recall the name but it was a spacious room) until he showed us the next one (Margaux & Jules) which was basically a family suite. It was great to have a bathroom with double sinks. Our friends took the Donatien room that was really quite eclectic (open wood beams and up a small stairway).

We browsed around the Chateau and came across a billiards room (the table is not yet restored) and the adjacent lounge with fireplace. We enjoyed using the lounge as we bought some cheese, bread, and wine at a local market and had a casual dinner by the fireplace that Olivier had kindly lit.

The simple continental breakfast that was served every morning was nicely presented (some variety would have been nice for those staying a few days) and the grounds around the Chateau were beautiful. The funny thing is that even though the main thoroughfare (D31) is fairly close, you would think that you are in the middle of nowhere.

Olivier was an exceptional host--always there when you needed him but not intrusive. And happy to go the extra mile to accommodate your needs--he works night and day.

We would love to return some day!

SeismicGuy

Room Tip: All rooms are quite nice but some are really unique--Donatien and Quentin & Aymeric.

We stayed at Arpentis for 4 days in May and hated to leave. The grounds are absolutely beautiful, and although it is a lovely old chateau, it is completely renovated and updated. We stayed in a huge room with a bathtub in the middle of it, overlooking the meadow. Exploring the grounds and the chateau itself was a treat. It is a quietly elegant B & B. The concierge, Olivier, is exceptional. Prior to our arrival, he made several dinner reservations for us, including 2 at other chateau/hotels with restaurants, and all dinners were wonderful. Even though the other chateaus were lovely for dinners, they were not as spectacular as Arpentis. The location is perfect for visitng all the "must see" chateaus in the Loire Valley. Chenenceau, for example, is about 10 minutes away. Olivier also finalized our arrangemnts for a hot air ballon ride which I highly recommend. It was our favorite experience in France. I would love to return one day.........

I know the word "breaktaking" is overused, but we literally gasped when we saw our room (the "Catherine" room). It was large, with huge windows overlooking their gorgeous grounds. When we got there, we were initially a little worried this would be a weird B&B style place, but the staff was extremely professional and polite and the hotel had all the modern amenities--gorgeous bathroom, plenty of hot water, free wifi, elevator, very comfortable bed, etc.

The grounds are idyllic, with lots of space to walk and explore the remnants of the chatetau's long history. Initially finding it was a little confusing, but once we did it's a 5 minute drive from Amboise (I would recommend driving if you're going to stay here, though hardcore cyclists would probably enjoy it too).

Overall, this was one of the most enjoyable experiences I've ever had staying at a hotel, at a completely reasonable price. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer.

A couple of other tips: this would be a great place for families or groups taking up multiple rooms, as they have some very comfortable common areas to hang out and eat picnic meals etc. (they have a fridge you can use, too, and even laundry I believe!). And make sure you take the underground tunnel to the pool area even if you're not going to swim--it takes you through the basements which are very cool to see.

Room Tip: I think they're probably all gorgeous, but we stayed in "Catherine" and loved it.

This was a beautiful place to stay. The view from our room was gorgeous and the rooms were very clean and spacious. Beautifully decorated. We would definitely stay there again, one of our favorite places we stayed in France.
