“A good experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2012

When you visit Al Areesh you need to recalibrate your expectations a little as it is basic and lacks a lot of facilities you may be used to. But, it is in the desert and for what you pay you get a fantastic experience. It's easy to get to and doesn't require a lot of off-road driving, just a short drive off the tarmac road to the camp. The cabins don't have air-con or fans so get very hot at this time of year (and I mean very hot !). However, you do have the option of sleeping outside as a bed frame is provided and they are happy for you to move your bedding from cabin to the outside bed-frame. The evening meal when we visited was fine and there was plenty of it - the breakfast was not so good and was disappointing.
It's well worth going out on the dune driving trip with Abdullah - a very skilful driver who knows how to throw a 4X4 around the big dunes. The camel ride in the morning is also a nice experience and quite funny to see the little lads who lead the camels giving them a hard time when they don't go where they're supposed to.
Somebody else has already mentioned going with the flow - and that's a good way of describing time at Al Areesh - do that and you'll have a great visit.

This beautiful desert camp was a highlight of my trip to Oman. The owner was incredibly hospitable and friendly, as were the staff. The owner even gave me suggestions for activities for the day that were EXACTLY spot-on. The driver for dune-bashing took me on an exhilarating trip; I think he is probably the best dune driver in the country. The food was excellent, including for a non-meat-eater - and they even had Omani coffee (not just instant.) The setting was beautiful, and the camp was well decorated and very clean and nice, including with an outside bed for when sleeping inside was too hot (which it was in early May!) I would come back here in a second, and highly recommend to all. And importantly, although you are still fully in the desert dunes, this camp is accessible by a normal (2-wheel drive) car. I have absolutely no idea what the negative reviews are talking about, they make no sense to me! This place is a great value and a truly wonderful experience.

Whether or not you like this place says more about you than Al Areesh. We have taken all of our visitors to Oman here and everyone of all ages has loved it. Perhaps it needs a little freshening up but you have relax and go with the flow. The charm is in the surroundings and the company that you keep. We think that the food is excellent, the accommodation clean and comfortable and the musicians add a nice touch to the atmosphere. Probably not the place for you if you expect 5 star for peanuts, but all the better for that!

not expensive for Oman but not worth the money you spend on it. Dirty, no competent staff, bad food, all in all either you go camping or you spend a little more but avoid this terrible place

we were booked there and honestly this place is no good at all. the price seemed reasonable due to the cost of accommodation in Oman but it's really expensive for what it is. no service, very poor breakfast, no organization, total inefficiency, no candle while the the generators had broken down, no working light bulb after, no water on taps...A good drive in the dunes yet for only 10 rials

Room Tip: go elsewhere

There are many of these desert camps in the Wahiba Sands in Oman now. They vary from basic to luxury. Al Areesh is somewhere in the middle. The 'tents' are basic but quite clean. Some have 'attached' bathrooms and some do not. You pay your money and make your choice. Location is at the edge of the Wahiba Sands which means it is easy to get to. A black top road goes all the way to the entrance where you can be picked up.

We live in Oman so were only using it for the bed but they do trips etc. There was some evening entertainment that was actually quite good and not to loud. There is a generator but it is far enough away so as not to be noisy.

Evening meal was good but breakfast was quite basic. Staff were helpful and did not seem to mind us taking our our drinks for the evening.

Room Tip: They seem to allocate the rooms closer to the main facilities on a fist come first served basis.

offers an overnight "shelter" in the desert, convenient showers and toilets, scrumptious buffet dinner and breakfast, endless supply of Omani coffee
this is a great place for snapping sand dunes at sunset AND sunrise
a chance to meet bedouin and camels near the camp
if you stay more than one night I imagine it might get a little quiet during the heat of the day

if travelling by public transport - it is worth asking them to pick and/drop you at Al Qabil to connect with the Muscat - Sur bus.

Friendly, helpful management and staff
