On that stormy evening, a tree had already fallen across the road. We didn't want to die if another lightning struck the trees, all precariously bent over the only way out of Kota Tinggi, so we stayed at Kota Tinggi Waterfalls Resort.
For RM150, stay in a chalet with all the makings of a horror movie:
- smashed lights
- TV with antenna held together with masking tape
- dusty, holey blankets with someone else's hair on them
- squeaky fan
- air conditioner that coughs out hot air
- broken toilet flush
- soggy toilet paper
Because the storm wouldn't let up whilst we were there, we had dinner at the resort. It really only had Ramli burgers on the menu and Milo, which luckily beats McDonalds and Burger King any day, so we didn't mind. Buffet breakfast the next morning was another story though -- flies were on everything!
The Kota Tinggi Waterfalls Resort actually has the potential to be a fantastic retreat as it is located right next to the waterfalls. Sadly, it is abysmally managed. They've also turned the natural beauty into a grotesque water park, complete with water slides and tubes for rent. All the staff working there had dazed, surreal expressions.
If you really want to stay in Kota Tinggi, try the Kota Rain Forest Resort instead, which was unfortunately fully booked when we were there.More
