We visited in early November 2013. The history is interesting and the beaches are very nice. We plan to return.

Didn't know anything about this fort and we were glad we went. It's in pretty good shape with lots of places to wander and a self-guided tour book with lots of info. Just so interesting to see what was built and how it got built to protect this country thru the years. Educational as well as fascinating.

To learn of its impact in guarding Pensacola and the relationship to south carorlina in the civil was makes it even greater learning in the south and civil war.

We were anxious to see Fort Pickens after seeing Fort Barrancas located in NAS Pensacola. We liked Fort Barrancas better, maybe because we saw it first. It is 6 miles out on a stretch of road with sand on it. The day we visited, we could not pull over to visit the seashore because of the rains. Geronomo was a prisoner at this fort with some of his tribe members. The arches are very interesting in the way that they can hold a lot of weight. If you are over 62, you can buy a Senior Pass and get unlimited access to all national parks and it never expires. This is the second park we have used it for, otherwise, it is $8 for a carload.

Been going here since I was a young lass. Back in the day you had more access to the buildings and batteries. Still it is an enjoyable attraction. I would recommend adding this to your itinerary. Since there is the option of a self guided tour, at your own pace, young kids can have fun too. Take a flashlight with you if you intend to explore some of the darker passageways. The gift store has many items on the history of Ft. Pickens; which is kind of surprising and interesting.
