“Decent value for basic accommodation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2010

Shermuh Hotel was a good value basic choice at alishan national park. Rooms were clean and modern, though bathroom did not have separate shower stall (not uncommon for budget hotels in Taiwan, we've found). We arrived at the park and were able to book the hotel there for less than the price advertised online, though we wouldn't recommend this during weekends and holidays. No breakfast, and coffee cost extra, though there was water (hot and cold) and tea available. Beds were hard, but we've had harder ones and we're used to it. Blankets were good and thick. Nice big tv with many channels. Staff were helpful and we were allowed to leave our luggage in the lobby while we hiked the next morning. There is a service provided where they will wake you up at 3am to see the sunrise, but at our request they did not disturb us and we were able to sleep well all through the night.

From the photos of the websites, the rooms seen wasn't very spectacular. I chose this hotel because of its location but when I reached there, in actual fact, there are many more hotels side by side.

We planned our trip on our own and booked this hotel through a 3rd party hotel reservation for a 2 night stay. Nobody told us that there is a toll fee at the entrance to the national park. When we called the hotel that we were approaching, they told us to wait at the entrance and they will scheduled their van to pick us up. It wasn't noted that when we booked the room with them, the park entrance fee is already inclusive. So please take note.

We were half hr earlier prior to check-in ard 3pm, and since the lobby is only a pathetic room size, the staff asked us to go elsewhere to wait. We booked the attic unit which was the top floor. No elevator mind you, need to climb a series of narrow stairs up. It was one of the smallest room but cosy for 2 I would say. No fancy sofa or cupboard, just a small dressing table with a stool and some hangers given. Bathroom was provided with a basket of basic amenities. When night fell, the temperature fell to 8 deg c, and the room was super cool despite the small windows were closed tight. We asked the front desk if there were any heater, the person told us that only when the temp drops to 7 deg c, then they will switch on the heater. Since it was 8 deg c, no can do. Luckily, we had our technical wear with us. We wore our fleeces and jackets to sleep.

Halfway through, someone came to knock on the door. It was a touting service for a tour in Yushan to see the sunrise. The person was charismatic and we fell for it. Well, he charged a decent price and well the tour was ok though we did not see any sunrise due to fog. But the thing was, how could the hotel just any old how let these buggers into the hotel and tout room by room?

Breakfast was in another place. They gave us the food vouchers as they did not have a restaurant. When we reached the restaurant, it was jam-packed with many tourists. I think other hotels also had this arrangement with the restaurant.

I will not go back to Alishan again. Alishan sunrise? It depends on how lucky you are to see. Alishan girls? I think Alishan aunties more like it. The whole place is full of touts touting for business and the eateries there rip tourists. The local souvenirs there were overpriced. This place is basically a tourist butchery. The park can be completed within a day, so no point staying at Alishan. It's better to stay at Chiayi town than up this mountain.

Recommend? Maybe, if you want to stay in Alishan for more than 1 day. Price of this hotel is reasonable, but don't expect hotel amenities like those in town.

ASITH is below the Alishan Railway Station and is about 10 - 15 mins walk for those who take the Alishan Forest Train. ASITH on the overall within the vicinity appears to be much better than its neighbouring hotel. ASITH has no elevator for older folks to access their rooms, no shower cubicle but bathtub which has no curtain so the toilet will be wet. We had booked a room for 4-pax but they return us NT200 for entrance fee instead of NT400 together with complimentary 2 cans of tea leaves for both of us but we are not bothered. The front desk and personnel are polite, friendly but did not told us we do not have to pay for train ride into the scenic area in Alishan to view the plum blossoms, giant trees etc. and or complimentary viewing of sunset and starry sky except only when we happen to hear it at the lobby area but in view of bad weather we are unable to see it. ASITH do not make-up the bed for the 3 days we stayed but only swept the wooden floor. TV channels were good. There is no electric kettles but a water cooler for hot or cold water to fill up the hotel vaccum flask in the room on each level at the corridor of the room. Alishan is cold there is no heater or robe, cabinet for you to hang your clothes but an open concept clothes hanger. ASITH supplied only bath towels and disposal face/hand towels. Will recommend friend/s to this hotel because of its cleanliness. and outlook and convenience to eateries, transportation and visitor centre ASITH appears to be the centre or associate of tour package/s for its neighbouring hotel. Its tour leader is very knowledgeable and friendly.

We booked this hotel through EZ travel as part of a tour package. Please don't ever book a tour package with them. We usually plan our own trips, but this time we decided to save some time and pay more. The lady who worked at Taipei Main's EZ travel sold us a trip that included more than we actually got. To be honest I really did not see why they charged us so much and provided so little service.

Enough about EZ Travel, after all this is a review of the hotel :) The hotel was not bad. The room and bathroom were clean. The bed was quite comfy, but maybe hard for some people. It was very noisy in the room, because most of the rooms in the hotel are for families. So we heard the kids all the time, although it did not really bother us. The location was okay. It was close to the tourist info centre, train station, reasonable priced restaurants, starbucks, 7-11, but you have to walk a while to see the attractions. Breakfast is served in another location nearby (about 5 min walk). They serve a Chinese style breakfast buffet with porridge, eggs, chow rice noodles, toast etc. The breakfast was okay, but some people did not like it because it had no meat.

The only real complaint that we have is about one of their staff members, who consistently gave us the wrong information. She told us that the trains ( to see the sunrise) were not running , however later we found out that trains were running. So we complained about it to someone else, because she was not there anymore.

The next day when we saw here was when we were leaving. We were told that the bus will pick us up at 11, so we waited outside. After waiting for ten minutes, we asked her whether the bus is still coming. She said that we just have to wait outside. After another ten minutes, so by now we waited 20 minutes outside, I tried to ask her colleague whether or not we'll be picked up at 11. Before her colleague could answer she answered in a snappy voice that we just have to wait outside. So what can we do than wait? After a while the boss asks us why we were still there, so we explained to him our situation. He went in and asked the same girl again and this time she said to him that we will be picked up at 12 o'clock! I do not understand why she did not say it right away, instead we waited over half an hour outside. We could have done other stuff instead of waiting there!!! Everyone but her was very friendly there.
