“Wood you believe it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 24, 2014

I wasn't to keen on the idea of visiting this museum but believe me it is worth a visit. Allow plenty of time to get round it - the staff are very helpful and friendly and gave us a helpful sheet of accomodation available in the area.
There is a nice cafe across the road if you need a seat for a while and then continue back at the museum.
Very glad I went!

“An absolutely outstanding museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 18, 2014 via mobile

We arrived late one afternoon, & with only an hour left for viewing & were offered a half price ticket - or full price & we could come back again in the morning. And thank goodness did opt for the latter, as there was so much to see & we certainly could have not done it justice in one short visit. In fact it's worth travelling far to visit this museum with such a diverse collection of really interesting exhibits - of course the Kauri trees & associated logging & furniture making industries, but the whole agricultural economy of this district, & the wax manikins rather intriguingly were provided with heads modelled on their present-day descendants.
There were kauri sailing boats, kauri-panelled rooms full of "period" furniture. Even a full sized mock up of an old "coaching" inn/traveller's hotel - 2 floors of it which one could explore.
Finally mention should be made of the excellent, very friendly & helpful staff.
All in all a memorable visit.

“Allow three hours”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2014

Who would have thought that a museum about just one species of tree could be so fascinating? This museum is not just about the kauri tree but about the whole social history of those whose lives revolved round it from the early pioneer days. I loved the living history reconstructions, especially the concept of modelling the life-sized figures on modern day relatives of those they were portraying! The sheer size of the trees and the amazing way in which they were felled and taken for processing were reflected in the many interesting displays. Watch out though, it's easy to miss out on an area when trying to find your way around.
