We had a delightful visit to Matakohe House for a single night. We were greeted warmly showed to our room and invited to arrange dinner in the restaurant if we wished. The room was very comfortable and we found the shower as mentioned by Faypeke to be easy to use and much safer than some we had had to step into.

The shared verandah was a great spot to have our picnic lunch that we had brought with us and Alex who was in the restaurant made sure we had plates, cutlery and condiments. We looked at the menu for the evening, selected our meal and decided upon a time we would dine. There was no waiting for the food and the price of our bottle of wine was reduced because we did not get the 'free glass of wine' offered on our arrival.

There was a small flagon of port and two glasses in the room which provided a great finish to the meal we had had. The room was quiet and we arose to enjoy a fine breakfast and, when we mentioned that we were meeting friends at the Kauri Museum in an hour or so, were given a discount ticket to reduce our entry fee. The discount ticket also covered our friends' admissions as well which saved us over $20.

It was very pleasant to receive a prompt phone call to our hotel in the Bay of Islands confirming our emailed request for accommodation. I did feel we were in good hands and we both felt welcome and valued. They do it all very well.

Room Tip: We found the room closest to the restaurant at the back of the building facing their garden a very q...

Thank you so much for taking the time to review Matakohe House. We get warm fuzzie feelings when our efforts are appreciated. It was a pity that faypeke took the view that she did but your review following so closely to her's restored our confidence and belief that we have a quality product to share with visiting and local tourists alike.

If you would like to practice living in a nursing home, this is for you. The building comprises about 4 rooms attached to a cafe, and we were the only ones booked in but as the evening progressed two other groups turned up. Our room down a wide passage was large with 2 small single beds with frilled bedspreads like my mother had 50 years ago. Our bathroom was right out of a nursing home - a sloping floor with a shower curtain round one end where the shower was - ideal for someone in a wheelchair - but we weren't in wheelchairs! There was a hospital-type alcove down the passage to make tea, and a community TV room - how do you share watching TV with people you don't know? Just as well no-one did because there was no soundproofing between the rooms. There was no-where else to eat in the town (Waitangi Day - holiday?) so we had a light meal in the cafe which was ok but the main courses for the other guests took ages to cook. The staff in the cafe booked us in, and when the cafe closed they left and locked the place up. I assumed that the owners lived next door, but we weren't told, and we didn't know who we would call if anything untoward happened in the night - fortunately the other guests were nice people who were quiet. There was a shared verandah outside the room but warnings of mosquitoes. The only reason to stay here would be for an early start at the Kauri Museum next door which is wonderful. The owners turned up to cook breakfast for us which was fine.

It is very important to us to have reviews of Matakohe House, thank you for taking the time to do so. When you made the booking you requested a twin bedded room I booked the room which in fact was the most chosen room by guests when they had the choice of the two twin beddeed rooms we have. I am sorry you deemed the room to be a stepping stone to a nursing home on the basis of the shower-in fact building regulations in NZ require a % of the rooms to be "assessable" (wheel chair friendly) which the room you had is. The next review we recieved was from a couple who had the same room and negates pretty much any of the criticisms you made. We are sorry you did not enjoy your stay at Matakohe House for what ever reason.
We try very hard to please every one and by and large we succeed as is born out by the many favourable reviews we receive.

Most pleasant setting and stay. Very hospitable and kind hosts. We would definitely return even though some decor/furnishings getting a little tired. Our room was very clean. Cafe dining area is a real hub and asset to this place. Enjoyed the Kauri museum too - an extensive fascinating collection - though it is pricey.

Thank you for taking the time to send a review about Matakohe house,it is important to us to get honest reviews such as yours.
We conceed that the decor/furnishings are a bit tired. We would like to sell our business as we need to retire and feel that a new owner would more than likely want to put their own stamp on the decorations hence our lack of action there.
The museum of course is a totally separate business which we support fully and compliment.
The community is fiercely proud of the Museum but the pricing structure is the responsibilty of the Mangement and Board of Trustees of the Museum. There have been concerns from local business people raised with the Museum re the entry fees.

We have visited NZ twice before and having stayed in many places in both the north and south islands we rate this as one of the best. Alex and Lyn are friendly and welcoming and their cooking (breakfast and dinner) is the very best. The accommodation is clean and well maintained, with beautiful gardens surrounding the property. Location is just down the road from the Kauri Museum. We both look forward to staying there again on our next trip. Gordon & Janet Higham UK

We decided to spend new years on a quiet place on our way to the next destination while stopping by the Kauri Museum. This stop in Matakohe house turned out to be a great decision. 3 weeks into our trip this is still our favorite of all accommodations so far. Super nice hosts, cooked us really tasty breakfast and dinner. the room and house itself is super lovely. This garden is very pretty. If you are looking for a quiet and romantic place, this is a perfect choice for you. If you are after action - probably not...

The Kauri Museum is the jewel in Matakohe .... it's most definitely worth a visit, but whatever you do avoid the disappointing Gum Diggers cafe ....... have lunch at Matakohe House instead. An easy 50 metre walk brings you to the attractive hotel in a delightful spot with genial hosts and good food.

On this occasion we did not stay, but it looked a most agreeable option that we will consider next time.

We stayed one night. Choose the place to stay due to the location next to the Kauri Museum. What a delight the place turned out to be. Thank you both sooo much for the great stay. Food was the best ever!! Would love another dinner like the one we had. Steak was cooked to perfection. If we are ever heading that way again we will be sure to stay again.
