Charter House is home from home, 11 of us stayed ranging from 8 years old to 66 years old, we celebrated 4 birthdays in the week we were there and enjoyed ourselves immensely.
Both The Anchor and The Kings Arms are great for food and staff are lovely too.
Round and about we visited many beautiful places, I would recommend a visit to Hartland Abbey, the walk to the beach is so peaceful and the views are lovely.
Also, The Warhorse country farm is a must, especially for anyone who's read the book or watched the film.
A fabulous week had by all of us. Thank you

“Old and in need of a refurb. ”
Reviewed October 22, 2016 for a stay in October 2016

We stayed here with a family of 10 over the summer to celebrate a big birthday. There were four children in the group and the house wasn't good for them at all.

The house is old and the furniture is dated. It smells, it's damp and one child stood in dog poo in the back garden.

One TV had no signal and the CD player's knob came off in my hand. The cd's are broken and mixed up too.

It's next door to the church (which is no longer a church) who's bell goes off every hour throughout the night waking us all up.

This house might have been nice once, and it's on a beautiful town, but there needs to be some money spent on this house.

Charter house is a listed Georgian property overlooking Hartland village square within a conservation area. Having had many positive reviews and comments in the guest book we were a little surprised by some of your comments. We are in the process of replacing the bedroom furniture. We trust that guests after using our CDs return them to the correct cases undamaged and clear up after their dogs; sadly this is not always the case. As the grass is cut/checked during changeover and the previous guests did not have a dog we are not sure how dog poo got in the garden. We do say to contact us if you have any problems and wish that you had as we would have come around to try and resolve them. Thank you for your review we welcome all feedback as it helps us to make improvements to ensure our guests have as pleasurable a stay as possible.

We sadly only stayed for two nights and would love to go again to explore the area and enjoy the house again. We were two families of 4 adults and 6 children, there was plenty of space for everyone, we didn't use the dining room or one of the sitting rooms as we didn't need to. The kitchen table can comfortably seat 10 and the kitchen has everything that you need. We took logs and had a fire in the woodburner, but the house was very cosy and warm anyway.
The children enjoyed the garden and the rope swing. As this was a family home it had a cosy lived in feel which was great when you have children as we didn't feel we had to tell them to tiptoe around and be careful all the time! As we went out of season the pub next door wasn't open on the Friday night so we went to one of the other pubs, none were serving food but on the Saturday night we went to the hotel at Hartland Quay for a very nice meal. We spent a day at Clovelly village and also visited Lynmouth on the way home on Sunday, where we went to the museum of water which the children loved, sadly the funicular railway doesn't operate in winter. We had lunch in The Village Inn in Lynmouth which served food all day and was very accommodating. We loved staying at Charter House and just wish we had had longer to enjoy the house and surrounding area. We had great communication from the Worby family, and although we didn't see anyone during our stay we had all the information that we needed about our stay. I'm a bit reluctant to recommend this house as I don't want it to get too booked up in case we can't book again!

“Great family get together in amazing house”
Reviewed October 31, 2015 for a stay in October 2015

Wonderful Grade II listed house retaining many of its original features. It was nice having two sitting rooms with TVs so you could get away and watch something peacefully if you wanted to. Huge table in the kitchen where we all gathered for meals and the person cooking was not left by themselves. There was a large formal dining room as well but we did not use this. All of the bedrooms were large although some lacked hanging space for clothes. In all a lovely warm, welcoming and spacious house with an exceptionally well equipped kitchen.

Thank you for your review and are glad you had a lovely time and made the most of the house and garden as well as the area.
We do supply a basic dinner set and cutlery in the kitchen as during the summer it is likely to be taken out side/ on picnics so needs to be replaced (due to breakages or loss) fairly often but we do provide a quality dinner set and cutlery in the dining room, we obviously need to make people aware of this.
We will check the wardrobe situation and find out why you were unable to open the built in wardrobes as only one should be locked due to the fact that it is the linen store cupboard and also into providing a wardrobe in the double room.
We hope that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back to Charter house again in the future
