“Sunset over Zion, can't beat it”
Reviewed February 15, 2013

This place definitely has the WOW factor.
We stayed for 3 nights and didn't really want to leave... We had a cabin with a view of the Zion Canyon and watched the sun set from our little porch, while the buffalos passed by so close we could almost touch them. Then went inside to light the fire place and cook dinner in the little kitchenette. We slept with the curtains open so we could watch the pitch black night sky over Zion from our bed.
The whole place is so rustic and charming, from the lay out of the resort to the tiles in the bathroom. It is the perfect place to wind down after a day of hiking Zion.

Room Tip: Ask for a cabin close to the entrance so you have wifi reception.

Agreed. 3 nights is never enough for Zion in the fall! The spring and the fall produce some of our favorite sunsets here at the ranch. Also, we're working on getting independent wi-fi hotspots for each cabin this year. Hopefully in time for your next visit?! ( The mountains make it tough to get good internet service up here, but the engineers assure us that we're close ) :)

Hope to see you soon!

This place is great! Many cabins on property, our cabin was clean and nice. We stayed for three days and used it as a base for our photography trips. Close to Bryce Canyon and right next door to Zion Park. It's awesome when you get up in the morning to snow and look over a see 50 Bison roaming around. Spectacular!

The ranch is located on top of the Zion range. Which means if you wanted to visit Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, or Capitol Reef, etc, it is going to save you the 30 minute drive up from the canyon floor (Springdale). Our last visit was in late January. The cabins are set up very well for the cold (snow in our case) with both conventional furnace heating in the floors, as well as a gas stove in the room. We stayed in a Champagne suite, (our second one actually), and were really amazed how well the cabins are put together. The suites have a nice couch which sets up for leisurely viewings of buffalo vista, and comfortable place to kick up your heals after a day of hiking. Both suites had the best shower we have seen (high water pressure) in years. On this trip, we got another pleasant surprise in wireless internet that worked surprisingly well from our cabin. We did not expect that. The kitchens have everything you need (excluding stove) and more. Two things were not so great though. The septic tank needed to be emptied, so it smelled in the bathroom on all days. And we had to fight 1 giant wasp, and 1 giant spider on separate days, who had somehow made it in to the cabin. They are located next to what used to be a first rate restaurant. We always like eating there. The filet was not up to standard, but the pork chop was. They are building more cabins, and it looks like they may try to expand the restaurant as well. Their business must be doing very well in the Summer season.

The hotel is near the entry gate to Zion and within driving distance of Bryce so the location is great.

The staff was friendly and helpful. The restaurant was amazing, we had thanksgiving dinner at it was some of the best meals I had in a while. Wonderful mountain style interior with large sunset views.

The room was refurbished before our arrival and so we had to find some of the settling in issues like the gas fireplace not working.

Wonderful place that I gladly recommend and we will be back.

I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at ZMR and there are very few things I would change nor do I have many complaints. The location is ideal for seeing all the sights in the area - right on the edge of Zion, an hour from Bryce Canyon, half hour from Coral Pink sand Dunes, and 2 hours from the North Rim. The setting is exactly what you want from that area: rolling grassy hills dotted with bison and the orange mountains glowing in the distance. I like the privacy and rustic feel of the cabins, although I would suggest they add big fluffy duvets to their beds, I think it would be a really nice touch. I would also suggest finding a way to have internet in the cabins, and maybe take out the bulky TV's, but that's just me. The restaurant, Chez Bison, was actually my favorite part of our stay, the atmosphere is just perfect, decorated rustically yet tastefully (not too country), the menu selection varied yet focused, and the food was pretty delicious! The service was very slow but I think they might just need to add another server because it's often quite crowded and the staff is swamped. Actually, maybe they need to figure out how to train all the staff a bit better, the front desk person wasn't overly helpful and maybe just one smile would of been nice. I wasn't terribly put off, but maybe just a bit more hospitality would be nice. Overall, it was a perfect escape from urban life and a relaxing, memorable adventure in Utah!

Room Tip: Ask for a cabin with good view.

Ah...ZMR. Loved it and already planning a return trip.
To get the bad out of the way early- its out of the way (see below for "The Good"), Internet reception depends on cabin, and pathways to the cabins and the cabin numbers are not well lit. (Bring a flashlight). Food options only include the restaurant (see "The Good") and the bathrooms can be a little cold. The fridge buzzes a little.
Now forget all that- to "the good." If you want to wake up to deer in your backyard in the morning and buffalo in the pasture across your front yard..this is your place. If you want to watch the sunset over the canyons and then sit at your firepit later and look up at a sky full of stars...this is your place. If you'd like a "cabin" with vaulted ceilings, a jetted tub, a dual head shower, a fireplace, a (small) kitchen, and hardwood floors.. this is your place. If you want to get way out of the way, but still be within an hour of Bryce and 15 minutes from Zion...you get it. No, ZMR is not perfect. I didn't give it 5 stars for a reason. But if you classify your ranch/cabin by if you can get internet access ZMR isn't for you. Remember: these are cabins, on a ranch. Not a hotel. The serene, natural setting, the unique-ness and the overall quality were outstanding.
I've reviewed the restaurant seperately- which I thoroughly enoyed.. If you want cheap- a simple fix is to grab some food to make in your kitchen on your way into ZMR (Kanab or Hurricane.) You'll have a hot plate with 2 burners, a microwave, a coffee maker and a good variety of silverware.
We extended our trip by a day- all we could manage with work. But we're already planning a spring return trip. I almost hate to review ZMR- I want to keep it my secret (but I've withheld which cabin we stayed in just in case). ZMR has ruined the idea of a "cabin" for me- I don't have a choice but to go back. You can't find this anywhere else.

Room Tip: Ask for a map of the ranch when you book so you can see where you'll be. Cabin 180 was very nice...
