We just returned from a Western tour starting with Zion National Park. We also hiked the Taylor Creek trail in Kolob Canyon and liked it very much. You are right about the rattlesnakes...my wife walked next to one (foot-and-a-half away) while the boys and I were resting under an outcropping rock. First time I've heard her cry out (ever). It never rattled...it moved away from her and raised its head and tail. We got some great pictures but have difficulty deciding if it is a Mojave or a Prairie Rattler. It had just eaten (big bulge) which is why it probably didn't want to tangle with my wife (good decision on the rattlesnake's part).
The trail was very good, but make sure you start EARLY. We were the first ones out and the first back. Nice hike, creeksides with finger canyons, hawks, ending in a beautiful double arch. Just watch your step!
