We have been volunteer campground hosts at Zion South campground since mid-June 2013. This is a first-come first-served campground. There is a nearly 75% turnover of sites every day. It is very important to come early (before 9 am) to find a site. Here are a few tips: find a site with no tag and nothing in the site. Make your tag and PUT SOMETHING in the site. The drop the fee envelope in the big canister at the entrance BEFORE you go hiking. This campground gets very heavy use due to the proximity of the beautiful Virgin River, the nearby visitor center, the excellent shuttle bus system, and the gorgeous hiking trails. The employees work really hard to keep the restrooms clean, and we work hard to help campers understand how important it is to preserve the native vegetation by not hanging things in the trees and not trampling the vegetation. We love Zion and want to help everyone appreciate and enjoy it!

We really enjoyed our stay at South Campground. This was partially due to the fact that we got a corner site closer to the river that had a large tree for shade, but there were many nice spots in the campground. I enjoyed the irrigation canals that watered the many native plants and the proximity to the river and the shuttle that served the rest of the park. We brought a shade structure with us that was really nice to put our chairs and coolers under. Many lizards around which were fun to watch, but also lots of ants! Definitely bring chairs to get yourself off the ground, and make sure your coolers lock closed, or keep your food in the car as the squirrels can be very ambitious and fearless, haha. Overall a very nice place to stay in the heart of Zion canyon - come early to find a good spot!

Room Tip: Closer to the river the better

Without reservations, it is difficult to be too choosy. On the other hand, they could have given the spaces a tiny bit more room so you did not feel you were on top of your neighbor. The bathroom facilities were average as well and serviced many campers. On the whole? We were happy to be staying inside the park rather than the other campgrounds in Springdale. They looked far worse.

We did appreciate an 11am posting of campsites that were available. All that was asked is you cross it off the list if you decided to take it. Very civilized and it appeared campers adhered to this request.

This place is pretty large and crowded. Get there early in the morning to reserve a spot. They have water and restrooms. Camping in Zion is pretty limited so crowded is to be expected. It is by no means a miserable experience, it just simply "did the trick." The shuttle and visitor center is close by so it's easy to wake in the morning and then get your day of hiking started ASAP. Also, if you want to go into town it is a short 10 minute drive out of the park for whatever you need be it camping gear, food etc...
While you're there DO THE NARROWS hike. Rent yourself some water boots and a walking stick and take the first shuttle in the morning to get there way before the crowds. You will encounter them on your way out of The Narrows but going in you'll barely see anyone.

First, the cons. We arrived a little before noon, but instead of getting one of the better, shaded sites along the river, we ended up with a small, dusty, partly paved site right next to the bathroom and dumpster. Across the road was a large RV with a noisy generator. The ground was so hard we couldn't get our tent stakes in, and on the first night, a howling wind blasted through the canyon, tore off our rain tarp and nearly toppled us over. The next morning, campers who either did not get a site or ended up in a lousy site the day before were stalking campers in the good sites to see who was pulling up stakes and leaving. We decided to keep out of the fray and just stay put.

Despite these issues, South Campground began to grow on us and we ended up having a very good stay. Why? Well, mostly because of the location. When you look up in any direction, you see the magnificent canyon walls. The sight and sounds of the neighboring Virgin River and the small creeks that run through the campground are really wonderful. You can escape the heat by heading down to the sandy banks and taking a refreshing dip. Also, you can take a short, pleasant walk along the river to the impressive, state-of-the-art visitor's center and canyon shuttle stop.

I need to say a few things about that shuttle system. This is really an outstanding park feature.
I truly loved not having to worry about driving or parking in the canyon. You get informative recorded narration up-canyon but not down-canyon. Trailhead options are announced at each stop. You can either look out and take in the spectacular views or mingle with other park visitors.
If you want to head into the quaint town of Springdale just outside the park to stock up on provisions, you can hop on a connector shuttle service (also, like the canyon shuttle, for free!)
The shuttle system is really nice and I don't have to mention the many environmental benefits of having such a system.

Our favorite shuttle stop was at the lodge, where the giant cottonwood tree and huge lawn make a perfect rest area following a demanding hike. The natural spring water re-filling stations here at elsewhere in the park are fabulous. What a great way to attack the problem of the ubiquitous plastic bottle! And the spring water tastes delicious!

So, if you're heading to Zion, taking a site at South Campground would be a good choice if you can arrive early in the day.

We arrived at South campground after driving from Vegas.....granted it was about 2PM but hoping that a Tuesday would help. We were told by the man at the gate that the grounds were full......that you would have to arrive before 10AM to get a site. We believed him, and drove to 2 other sites, before being directed to another campground that was available but almost 40 miles away. On day 2, we did the same thing, and the entrance sign said--FULL---but after driving just into campground, we spotted multiple sites that were empty. The sites are large and provide fire ring, and picnic tables. There is overhead coverage from trees, but between sites, there really isn't much to separate you from your neighbors. We hiked Angels Landing and got back to the grounds after a big dinner....and were more than happy just to sleep. The campground was quiet and people that we did have contact with were very friendly and well mannered. It was only $16 a night and soooo convenient for all the attractions and shuttles at Zion.

We came here looking for a site on the same day as the last unhappy reviewer..Thursday, May 9th, 2013..But with a totally different experience..The sign at the entrance kiosk says that the South campground is full, but it really isn't.... We were looking for a site about 1:00 in the afternoon..Guess we just lucked out..We saw no mob or anything resembling that..And we talked with others looking for a site..It was a calm scene all around for us...

With the threat of rain and already a few sprinkles falling we saw a couple packing up, so we nabbed site 85 as soon as they left....This site was on the outer edge of the loop...No one was too close and with a wonderful view of the red rock cliffs..We had wished we could have stayed numerous days..We too were at the end of a long Utah Nat'l Parks trip.

The camping area is a large tent-city, like most popular National Parks are.... but some sites are way better than others. There is another newer campground (more level pads) nearby but it is by reservation only....When you are on a long road trip it is mostly impossible to make reservations, so first come first serve is essential....My only beef was, (as usual), no showers here...A nearby outfitters store had two showers, for $5.00 each. What a rip! We thought $16.00 was a reasonable nightly fee here at South Camp....Our California State Parks charge $25-$50 nightly! Double rip! Good Luck!
