Driving south on I-15, returning to Las Vegas after touring Zion, Bryce and Capitol Reef National Parks, on a whim we decided to check out the Kolob Canyons Road as we had a little extra time and we did not get the chance to visit this distant part of the park earlier. Wow! What a fortunate decision! The road climbs for a short distance then makes a turn to the right and an amazing view of red sandstone cliffs come into view and the views only get better as one proceeds up the remainder of the 5 mile long scenic road to the Kolob Canyons Viewpoint at the top which is sublime. Park and get out here to enjoy the cool, fresh air and get a good look at the series of narrow “finger” canyons slowly being cut back by creeks and waterfalls that flow during wet periods leaving hanging gardens and hidden valleys behind. On the return, time permitting, stop at some of the other pullouts for a look or just enjoy the beauty as you drive slowly by. At only 5 miles each way, even a quick visit is very rewarding but there are a number of trailheads along the road if you have more time and energy.
