Yes you do read and look at the reviews and scenery , but nothing prepares you for the stunning majesty of the ravines , rocks , colours and the contrast of the vegetation. Make sure you do the trip at both ends of the day because the colours change dramatically.

This review only covers the Southwest area of the park. We visited 1/13--off-season enough that we were seemingly alone on the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive (ZCSD) from 3 pm 'til shortly after 6 pm. The fields and streams are starkly juxtaposed by the towering mountain formations bathed in the bright sunlight from behind us making every turn a phenomenal photo op. We returned driving south at dusk as numerous deer appeared in the fields to feed. The full moon rose in the cloudless sky across the road on our way back to the Visitors Entrance and "downtown" Springdale where we enjoyed a delightful night and amazing breakfast at the Historic Pioneer Lodge. NOTE: Spring through Fall ZCSD is open to shuttle buses only beyond Canyon Junction.
Over the next 4 days, we visited Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonland, and Arches National Parks. Zion was our No. 1 park. A real must-see.

Zion was the second National Park (1st - Valley of Fire) that we drove through on our 4 week USA road trip. It was a comfortable 1 day drive from Las Vegas to Page. We had time to stop at a couple of places to take photos and use the restrooms. We arranged our road trip to coincide with the "off season", missing the crowds and just catching the last of the autumn colours. Spectacular views and constantly changing landscapes. We are so pleased we left Vegas. This is great one day drive.

We were part of a biking tour that went through the area. It was hard to ride and to take pictures, due to the incessant desire to look up all the time. The rock formations were hard to imagine as being real. The air was so fresh, and the entire experience was almost divine.
