Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort

You just can't beat having nice people and nicer surroundings, while you visit one of the most beautiful places on earth. Of course we are discussing ZPR and ZNP... Although ZPR is located further away from the park, than most generic hotels and BnB's, ZPR is definitely worth the little extra distance. People who think this is an "out of the way" location, are accustomed to staying INSIDE Disney and really should stay much closer to the park. For those looking to relax, while on vacation (novel idea), we recommend staying here. The cabins are very comfortable, shared baths are quite clean and accessible, and everyone loves the pool, hot tubs and warm staff. ZPR is not your typical hotel, it is a welcoming ranch that allows you to create real memories that ultimately invite you back.

Room Tip: If staying in a Cowboy Cabin, some like to be closer to the Shower House, while others prefer the ou...

We stayed at the ranch for two nights in a cowboy cabin last summer and were pleased with our stay. We ate there for dinner once and the food was ok. We were gone all day hiking in the park, but did use the heated pool at night which was nice. Separate bathrooms and showers were not a problem for us considering that we payed just $80 a night. The cabin had double bunk beds and was cleaned every day. Nights were cold even in the summertime and we were happy to have bedsheets, blankets, and even a heater which we didnt use. The ranch is just 10 min from the park's east entrance which is a must see and very different from the main canyon. There are a few slot canyons that can be hiked on this side as well as a nice overlook right before the tunnel. Springdale is where you'll have to park the car during the summer and then take the shuttle so we had breakfasr/dinner there the next day.

We had great luck in finding last min availability at ZPR. We got there and the young lady tending the reception was very nice. We were assigned cabin 7 and it looked pleasant and nice from the outside- very family/children oriented. The door was open and the inside looked as if there was someone else still "living there"! Pillows and Trash everywhere- candy wrappers, coffee pot halfway full, opened shampoo's, soaps, and lotions. Trash receptacles w/ a few items and other papers and docs. The office would close soon so we just cleaned up and started w/ our stay. To our surprise at bedtime, the sheets were used/dirty, the sheets and pillow covers had hairs, there were stains on the blanket, side of the bed floor was wet (slightly stained-maybe someone threw up), and most towels were used. Inside/ between sheets, we found a water bottle, and a ziplock bag full of water too- maybe urine?!? It was far too late to complain to the office. Needless to say, we didn't sleep. To make matters worse, Bedroom heater did not work. Left early next morning to park excursion. Came back and bed was made but no change of bed linens or towels. Trash still left and no broom or vacuum used. There are no basic utensils or paper products other than toilet paper provided. HAIR DRYER DIDN'T WORK!!! Urgh! Activities are a bit run down but enjoyed them anyway- swings, pool table, pin-pong, etc. the pool is absolutely gross! Dirty, filthy, unattended. The massage area / spa was closed and looked abandoned.
Nonetheless, we enjoyed the National parks surrounding ZPR so had a nice time anyway. Your call. Expensive if you ask me, but it all depends what your looking for.

Room Tip: Definitely book in advance, know the different types of cabins they have, ask for an after hours num...

We originally reserved a tent site, but when we arrived on the ranch the wind was bitterly cold, so we asked if they had one of the wagons instead. They informed us that they weren't heated, but we thought, at least the wind would be blocked. The night was very cold, and we woke up the next morning frozen, but the the wagons were super cool, and the kids loved them. There was a queen and two twin bed, which was perfect for us. There were grills, firepits, and water around the campsite, as well as each site had a picnic table. The bathrooms were well maintained. There were about 10 showers and they were separate from each other, so you had great privacy. The bathroom stalls were clean, and heated which was nice on these chilly mornings. They had a laundry facility with two washers and four dryers. The zion ponderosa offed many great activities such as horse back riding, zip line, basketball, tennis, pool table, ATV rides, and sunset jeep tours. The staff was very courteous and friendly. One drawback that we found was it was on the east side of zion, and about a 20 min drive to the park, with little food options and shops. Other than what they served at the ponderosa. So in order to eat, shop , and catch the shuttle, you had to drive through the park to Springdale, which had a all the restaurants, and shop that offered more of a variety. The other negative was the trash cans weren't emptied often enough. With camping out and throwing all our scraps in the trash cans they quickly became full and overflowing. I think this would attract animals as well as in the summer cause an order problem.

Like royclarke61 we arrived and were initially impressed. However, after we saw the reduced list of activities available during their 'off-season' we were a little disillusioned. Our daughter is 10 so there was less choice anyway, but the ranch feels more like a holiday camp than a working place. Which I suppose it basically is. The food in the restaurant was actually very nice and we enjoyed the 1 hr horse walk - our wrangler was very friendly and chatty. The voucher system is a bit of a pain as there are not enough staff roman the purchasing kiosk at all times. In the end, we decided just to go back to Zion canyon for the day as the ranch is about 7 miles (5 miles down a side road then 2 more along the highway) down the road from the eastern entrance to the national park. Unfortunately, on our return the cleaner hadn't finished our chalet and had left the door propped wide open. the clerk on the desk was not at all apologetic about this so I can see why others have complained about service levels. Did we enjoy ourselves and feel the activities were safely run? Yes. Would we return? No. Would we recommend? Only if your child is 12 or over and you went between labour day and Presidents' Day when more is running. We think this means from end of May onwards.

Wow! We have travelled to 49 of 50 states and numerous countries around the world and have never received better service from check in to dining room. The local Utah trout was prepared to PERFECTION. Chef Fracesca came to our table to share a few of her secrets. Everyone treated us as though they owned the place. As business owners for 20+ years, we know great service and folks you won't find any place any better.

We had a great time at this resort. The customer service was excellent. They were very accommodating to us by allowing us to keep our two horses on the premises. It is very close to the Park on the east side which we liked. The restaurant was wonderful cooking. Vaughn, the manager, and Frances the chef were very engaging and knew us on a first name basis.

Room Tip: We liked the "cowboy cabins"
