We have been here many times, always enjoy the 26 mile scenic loop it has fantastic scenery and an abundance of wild life. We were truly surprised by a huge elk herd we saw the other night. We had never seen them up close before, always very far in the distance, but this time they were crossing the road right in front of us, didn't spook and run away while we sat and enjoyed watching them. We love going through the park at sunrise and sunset that is the best time to get truly good pictures and see more wild life, although there is always an abundance of bison sometimes the wild horses are only seen close by in the early morning or evening. On this day we arrived in the late afternoon and did the loop before setting up camp. We saw many elk, deer, antelope, bison, horses, and too many prairie dogs, they seem to be everywhere in the South Unit, these days. The RV campground was completely full! Unfortunately they don't seem to monitor the RV camping area very well as there were many camp sites with tents only in the RV campground when there was plenty of room in the tent only campground area. It's unfortunate when people have no place to park their RVs due to campers with tents only in the few RV sites.

Pros: beautiful views, very natural, plenty of wildlife, impressive rocks and interesting museum.

Cons: the staff wasn't very helpful. The TR cabin tour was terrible.

This NP is really beautiful. Definitely it deserves a visit.
I learned a lot about Roosevelt's life in the visitor center/ museum.
I recommend the loop road. Be aware that are some construction going on.

Touring the South Unit was absolutely amazing. All sections of the road are now open. The scenic loop route is approx. 36 miles and takes you past some of our Country's most rugged landscapes. I thoroughly enjoyed hiking the Ridgeline Trail, a short, yet moderately difficult nature trail. The view atop Buck Hill gives one a 360 degree panorama of the entire region. It is the highest point in the South Unit. I encountered my bison in the South Unit than in the North Unit. I also recommend seeing the Boicourt Overlook.

Lots excellent history here. NPS has a good visitor's center and educational programs in the Summer. Go to the North Unit if you want to get away from people, hike, etc.

Whether you're travelling past on the interstate or if you're stopping in Medora for a day or two, make sure you take the time to drive through the park at least once. Depending on your interests you can simply drive through and see the gorgeous scenery (about an hour of travel time) or you can stop and hike some of the trails. If you want to immerse yourself in the beauty you can camp in the campground or even do some backwoods camping. You're guaranteed to see prairie dogs, and the odds are good that you'll spot a herd of buffalo or a band of horses grazing in a meadow. Bring a camera because the sites are awe-inspiring.
