Our stay at Skyland in Shanandoah National Park was just what we wanted it to be...actually better than we expected. The room was clean, comfortable, and had a beautiful view from the balcony. The location perfect for hiking up to Stoney Man and Hawksbill. The restaurant had good food and the service was efficient. It was not fancy but rustic and fit the setting. Even though it is expensive, the location is great and we will stay there again.

I have been going up and down US 11/I-81 and US 29 for about 50 years and had never been to Shenandoah National Park. We celebrated our (daughter, wife and me) birthdays with our grand kids (12 & 10) over a long week-end in October. I booked two preferred rooms.

We arrived on a foggy Friday afternoon, which eventually turned into a very, very foggy Friday night. Our rooms (91 & 92) were ready early after our lunch in the dining room. They were located in a rustic building with a total of six rooms... all with balconies looking west over the Valley, which we couldn't see on arrival because of the fog.

The rooms were very clean (and serviced nicely by Jason each morning) ... both with two comfy queen beds. There was a table desk, a small dresser, a night stand, a closet and coffee maker with a small but serviceable bathroom with a bath & shower. The best part... a huge picture window that looked through our balcony west towards the Valley. Spectacular.

The rooms were a reasonable walk to the dining room and office.

The rooms were super quiet, except on the balcony where some birds and chipmonks seemed to keep up a constant chattering. :-)

There's a worn rustic charm to these rooms. And the reward... when the fog lifted Saturday afternoon you could almost see West Virginia.

Room tip: Rooms 89 through about 120 all have great views. Some of the cabins do also.

I stayed in Canyon which I would highly recommend because there is a clearing behind it that lets you watch the sun set from the back porch. No day to day cleaning of the room but I am not really messy anyway. Staff was kind. The room itself I a bit old but it is what I expected. It was clean and the bed was comfortable. No outlets close to the bed for my phone. Would come back for a stay in Shenandoah national park.

We spent last October weekend at Skyland in a "premium" room. The room was clean and comfortable. It is rustic, and intentionally so, with pine paneling and wood floors. The bathroom also was quite clean and the shared porch overlooking the valley provided some nice afternoon peace and quiet. Like virtually all of the National Park lodges originally constructed in the 1930s, however, the walls are not well-insulated and noise from adjoining units can be a problem. The Skyland introduction materials caution visitors to refrain from noise from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., but that caution is often ignored -- particularly because many units now have (much to our disappointment) televisions. The food at the lodge is best described as "iffy" but that may be, in part, the result of the extraordinarily busy time of year with leaf-peepers. Waits for breakfast were as long as an hour and the restaurant appeared to be very short-staffed. The location is first-rate, however, with easy hikes to the Stony Man precipice and the Limberlost Trail I have watched the disappearance of the old-growth hemlocks over the past decade from wolly alegid and now the mature ash trees are threatened with extinction from the emerald ash borer. Both the evergreen and deciduous forests seem -- to me -- quite clearly and tragically in crisis. Kind of takes some of the joy out of leaf-peeping.

Room tip: End-units will help reduce noise

I came here with my in-laws and friend. They were visiting from UK. We had a great drive from Annapolis MD. The hotel room had a beautiful balcony which was fantastic to watch the sunset. We were able to book a horseback trail ride from the main office. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The restaurant was nice and once again, beautiful view.the only down was the house wine was too sweet. Order something else other than the house wine(red and white). You can drive to Luray caverns with 30 minutes. I totally recommend staying here. Convience for the adventurous person with out camping.
