Perfect place to sleep in Shenandoah NP. We had a rustic cabin, but with AC (which we didn't need). The view from the porch was awesome, with some deer visiting us at sunrise. The room even had a huge TV screen (but who needs a TV with such an outside view).

Arrived from the north entrance to Skyline Road, but low cloud hide any views of more than 10/15 metres away.

Not easy to work out where to check to the lodge accommodation. Staff not all helpful, although some are exceptional.

Lodge 144 was fine. No sound proofing so some fellow guests noise was excessive.

Dinner and breakfast was available in the main dining room, with music entertainment most evenings. 7 minute walk from the Lodge.

Great info on all options for walking, visiting etc, we tried the Loberlist Trail and half a mile into the Appalachian Trail near the Big Meadow we met three deer and then a black bear. Great experience.

Good and safe driving, with the speed limit set at 35mph throughout the Park.

My family was terrified of black bears, so we decide to stay in a hotel room, rather than in a tent. $150 seemed a little steep for a room without A/C. We booked nonetheless, thinking that the nights would be cool (they weren't) up in the mountains. Once we got to the property, we were surprised to find out that we had been placed in a cabin. It seemed a bit odd, but we assumed that we had been upgraded due to a shortage of rooms. The cabin was 100 yrs old and looked romantic from the outside. The inside was a different story. The air stuffy and smelled like mildew. There were spiders and webs around every window screen. The outside temperature was 90F and there was not A/C in the cabin. We barely got any sleep. The bathroom floor was teeming with carpenter ants. We ended up cutting our two-day trip short, before we all succumbed to exhaustion. There were more surprises at check-out. We were charged $250/night, since we stayed in a cabin, even though we had booked a room @ 150/night. We were reimbursed the difference after complaining to the front desk staff.
The food around the resort was expensive and limited. I would recommend booking a hotel outside the park and taking day trips up the mountain. There is ample parking next to the trails.

We started in a rustic cabin in Skyland. The room had everything necessary for a short stay. The balcony at the back of the cabin looks out into the mountains.
The setting is absolutely amazing with a range of walks directly from the hotel. The hotel staff will provide routes on request.
The bar offers live music in the evening. Staff there are very friendly.

I reviewed Skyland Resort last year at this time when we went with some friends. We went again this year and I must say that our accommodations and the food were better this time around. First the room; we stayed in the building labeled Canyon. I enjoyed this room much better than last years cabin. The room was motel like with 2 queen beds, a balcony overlooking the valley, a bigger bathroom (with a full tub) than the cabin, a ceiling fan, and a TV. It smelled much less musty than the cabin with no discernable dampness. The down side to this stay as far as the room is concerned was that housekeeping never cleaned our room the day before we checked out. There were two other minor problems with the room ( which we made known at checkout), the chain pull on the ceiling fan was stuck so the fan ran on high when it was on and the exhaust vent in the bathroom did not work.
The other thing that I am happy to update was the food at the resort. The Taproom appears to have gotten a new menu from last year that has included a larger variety of items than just hamburgers. I do not eat hamburgers so I was ecstatic to see this! I enjoyed a Portobello Mushroom on Focaccia bread and it was very good. In addition, our server that first evening was Jim and he was awesome! He mentally remembered the dinner order of the 9 of us, got it right, and was incredibly personable and friendly! He stands out to me from the other employees.
I would go back to Skyland next year but will insist to our friends that I stay in the Canyon building again.
