Attended a wedding here. Rooms were rustic as most Nat'l Park accommodations are, but they do provide amenities. Beds had new mattresses, coffee maker, hair dryer, shower, air conditioning. Cabins do not have air, but all other amenities. Clean, daily housekeeping service. A bit spendy, 179/night.

I enjoyed my stay at Skyland but I if you are thinking of staying you should do your research first as it might not be for everyone. "Rustic" is the word that comes to mind. I was in the park by myself but don't think my girlfriend would have enjoyed it much. For me, the lodge feel with a history older than the park added to the experience. I stayed in a cabin, no TV or phone and you could easily hear people next door. So if you like the feeling of staying someone from a time gone by this might be for you. If you want a little more luxury better look in some of the nearby towns. Restaurant was a bit expensive. I found the food in the bar better value for money. Getting in and out of the park takes a while on the winding roads so the location is great for rolling out of bed and being on a trail in no time.

We stayed at the Skyland for 3 nights during Labor Day weekend in Bushyhill cabins, room 45. I think those ones are of the original buildings which may seem outdated compared to the newer buildings. But yet the room is very spacious, with big bathroom, nice closet space and great views from the porch. Each room has a porch with comfortable chairs to spend some time relaxing after long day hikes, watching the valley and farther ranges in sunset light or in the morning when fog covers the valley entirely as a milky river. Dining room is a little bit overpriced, but the Mountain Tap room is a good place to have lunch, quick dinner and to taste local beers and cocktails. Breakfast buffet is very satisfying to stack up on food for long day hikes. Keep in mind though, that in the evening you are stuck at the resort and there is no place to go except the dining room building, no TV and phones in a room, which is done on purpose to keep natural surroundings untouched by outside world technologies. One more thing about the older cabins - the sound-proof is very low, and even though the resort has quiet hours between 10pm and 7am, don't expect that all people will follow it. You may have some noisy neighbors, which may wake you around 6am, like we did - some Chinese guys who would get up at 5:30am every day and run away for their hikes. The breakfast is served at 7:30am, by the way.

At the end, it was a good stay overall, because of the park - good hiking and beautiful views.

Room Tip: Rooms in the building one row up than Bushyhill building have better views. The higher the building...

We stayed in the resort this past August. We were in a room with 2 double beds in the main building facing west. I was a little apprehensive after reading the reviews but we enjoyed the stay. A bit of a hiccup after we checked-in and couldn't get the lock and latch to work on our door. The staff came down right away and after some jury-rigging with a screwdriver, they got it open. A little unnerving but we settled in and went to listen to the ranger program.

The reviews are spot on but being in the National Park is a great experience. The rooms were a bit tired but after a bit, we soaked it up as part of the experience and the cool mountain air and nighttime views really were spectacular. Rooms were clean and we enjoyed our nice, quiet stay.

The park wherein Skyland Resort resides is nice. The grounds are kept up and nature is aplenty for hiking or animal watching. (We saw a lynx and a bobcat while there, and friends saw a bear!) The Tap Room for something to eat is fine. Nice staff everywhere. But two major complaints: 1. The main dining room opens and closes at different times during the day, instead of just STAYING OPEN!!! We had to drive down the mountain (30 minutes) into Luray to get breakfast since we missed the precise time in the dining room. 2. The cabins are quite rustic and while that may have been cool in the 1950's it is not cool today. Sound issues (you can hear your neighbors easily), cruddy bathrooms, lousy beds....these things are worn out and older than dirt. If you like sleeping in a tent, this is for you. If you want a "resort" (as in Skyland "Resort") find one...because this ain't no resort when it comes to the accommodations.

This place once had charm but now looks tired. Our $140 room was worth about half that. Soap dispensers on the wall, no air conditioning and tepid hot water. The restaurant has great views but again is over-priced for what is honest but uninspiring food. The resort is run by a contractor but feels like a government-managed facility. It could be so much more in this magic location.

The rooms are set up as multi unit cabins. Each room has a deck off the back with shared entry foyer. The walls are quite thin. We could hear our neighbors child crying and voices through the walls . Despite this, the location is nice and the restaurant and lounge are good. The breakfast buffet is great.
