“Historic lodge charm”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

We've stayed here on two occasions, last time was one night in July 2012. We came back because we liked it so much the first time, and made sure our route passed by this place once more. The first time there we stayed in a historic little room, with one queen bed, alongside the main building (housing the restaurant and reception), we loved it! Last year those rooms were already full and we got a room with two queen beds in a two story newer building, overlooking the valley beneith.

I'm sure the views are beautiful from this room, when the weather allows it, but we were unfortunate enough to get fog.... Still the area is filled with animals, I don't know how many deers we encountered, or butterflies, different birds and even a bear and a barred owl. They really made up for the bad weather!

The restaurant offers great breakfast/lunch/dinner choices, at reasonable prices, in a room overlooking the valley as well. If you think your room gets too lonely, you can spend time in the common living room adjacent to the restaurant. You'll find someone else to talk to, or just sit down and enjoy the view. In addition the park service has several activites one can participate in, and lectures on the history and fauna of the area one can attend (onsite).

If we find ourselves close by sometime in the future, we would go back for sure!

the hotel was nice, clean, and the view were just spectacular, especially on Fall with yellowing leaves... worth to see on spring too I guess... went to go hiking afterwards, which is not very far from the hotel.

I'm writing this 6 months after my stay in order to contrast Big Meadows 2012 with my more recent Skyland (also in the park) experience.

I believe Aramark ran the concessions - namely, the only dining and bar options. I was very pleased with the quality of food, the wine list, the healthy beer selection, and the very fun musical group providing entertainment. It's a great lodge experience. You can find a quiet corner with a view, or near the fireplace, or down at the bar with the band.

Room Tip: Some rooms face the woods, some have stellar western exposure. You can get your view fix all day lon...

My husband and I can't believe what took us so long to visit Shenandoah National Park and stay at Big Meadows Lodge. The lodge is historic, quaint and rustic with a beautiful view. It is located right in the middle of the Skyline Drive, with hiking trails closeby and the fabulous Byrd Visitor Center within walking distance. Our room was not the most modern but was very comfortable and clean. There is so much to do and see there that we weren't in our room much anyhow. The lodge dining room is absolutely charming with the friendliest of staff serving delicious meals. There was a fire in the huge fireplace in the great room with plenty of seating for all to enjoy the ambience. We stayed for only two nights and this year we have already booked for September for four nights. Can't wait to return !! If you love nature, history and the outdoors, Big Meadows Lodge is the right choice for you !

My daughters (9 year old twins) and I visit Big Meadows Lodge annually for a weekend getaway- we are coming upon our 4th annual trip. Its always one of the best weekends of our year. The lodge is centrally located in Shenandoah National Park and can give you quick access to many hiking trails, sights and recreational activities. We love the big open game room and the restaurant. We also love getting picnic lunches made by their food service. The rooms are comfortable and clean, though we don't really spend much time in them as we are usually outside enjoying the park. I love this place!

Room Tip: We like to get the superior rooms with a color TV and a/c.

We chose to have the "halfway" experience of staying in the lodge room instead of camping. This was great as we had our basics and a beautiful view of the valley below. We enjoyed taking in all the ranger programs and filled our day with hikes and programs provided by the National Park Service. We ate breakfast and dinner in the lodge dining room and winged it with cold cuts etc from the ice chest for lunch. No TV or microwave in the room. We did pickup wireless internet because we were right next to the office ~ normally it is not provided in the rooms. We were traveling from Georgia to Maine to put my son on the Appalachian Trail as a southbound thru-hiker. The National Park gave us the mood we were looking for to be outdoors in the woods but not have to pitch a tent. Nothing fancy but just right.

We rode motorcyle on the Blue Ridge Parkway - got a late start for the day, knew we would be staying at the lodge, but did not know what to expect. We were greated with warmth and enthusiasm. We go a room in the motel portion. Came back to the resturant for a very nice meal, great wait staff. And then to our surprise was also able to enjoy free entertainment in the lodge bar. Very nice evening, went to the room, sat outside enjoying the fresh air and stars - Very relaxing. Room has everything you need - such a plus cause on the Motorcycle you are limited. :-)
