BE SURE that you travel the entire Trail Ridge Road. It is one of the benchmark vacation experiences in the United States.

Just an amazing drive through Rocky Mountain National Park. Travel the road in both directions because the views are different.

Give yourself lots of time! At the Alpine Visitor Center, take the time to climb the small hill with the stairway...it's worth it if only to accomplish something outside your car

Beautiful views, precarious roads. I would have liked to stop for a hike, but we ran out of time. We did climb to the top of the peak (near the visitor center, there are stairs leading up to it). That was a bit of a letdown in the way of views. Lots of fellow tourists, without much payoff.

We recently took Old Trail ridge Road up to the top (one way dirt road) and saw several marmots along the side of the road. The views from the Visitor Center at the top are amazing. It is simply indescribable and something you must do on your trip to Estes Park. I would advise going in the morning as there seemed to be afternoon thunderstorms almost everyday the week were were there. Also allow yourself plently of time (devote the whole day) so you can stop and hike various trails along the way. We had to get back down to make an afternoon horseback riding appointment and I regret feeling so rushed. Take a picnic and just stop and soak up the beauty. Or, grab lunch in the Visitor Center restaurant. Great pulled pork sandwiches!
