“Don't miss the gorge overlook”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

Most people go from the parking lot to the overlook and fail to cross the street to see the lovely glacier scoured rocks sporting new moss and the fabulous view straight down into the gorge pulsing with rapids. Loop back to the road and under the rock archway. Kids love it and guys just have to spit off that bridge. (Physics folk can calculate the distance.)

You can also trek off toward Nickel Creek and up the Cowlitz Divide from here. Killer up of switchback after switchback to the Wonderland Trail portion of Indian Bar. Once you are up there you are king of the world!

“Nice stop”
Reviewed November 27, 2012

This is an attractive short walk that contrasts the other wide vista hikes we took in the National Park. This walk is much more about looking down into the impressive Canyon, rather than the views around you. It is only a short walk and definitely worth the stop.

“Easy walk - definitely worth a brief stop”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

Driving through Mt. Rainier National Park we were eager for something to break up the drive. This was a nice, short, easy hike. An elderly couple was hesitant to take the walk - not to worry. There is a wee bit of elevation change (wee = very, very little), but the trail is paved - I think the slope is easier going counterclockwise. You get to see an old lava flow*, the water rushing through the canyon is mesmerizing (don't get dizzy and fall off the footbridge!), and check out some of the plants along the trail - like houseplants on hormones (in a good way).

The Stephen Canyon Road is closed through the end of 2012, so you may not be able to reach this attraction.

*Be forewarned - some sicko scratched a swastika on one of the lava flows.

“Interesting, easy hike”
Reviewed August 21, 2012

This was a nice little hike. You can see how the glaciers carved the rock as they flowed through the area. The canyon is really narrow and impressive. The loop trail takes you on a bridge over the canyon. Start the trail on the same side of the bridge as the parking lot, and return the same way if you are short on time. The other side of the hike isn't as interesting.

“Easy to miss, but don't.”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

It's easy to not want to stop yet again. But do. The short walk is paved and easy for a leg stretcher. Then you are rewarded with an incredibly deep, narrow canyon. It only takes a few minutes to see, but it leaves an indelible mark on your memory.
