A nice hike down to the Geyser basin provides you with the opportunity to walk among 'Hell' along the Boardwalks. We visited on a lovely sunny day in September and there were only a few visitors which made it all the more enjoyable. No doubt a highlight to visit in the park so in high season I would recommend an early or late visit in the day. I wouldn't plan on eating eggs that evening, they might not go down to well after smelling the sulphur !

This is a short hike that winds through some rocky landscape and descends into an area well maintained by the park service. Once you get down, there's a wooden plank walkway through the active area where you hillsides steaming, water boiling and random beautiful lakes and vistas. The way up is a little bit of a climb but well worth it. I highly recommend you take the time to checkout Bumpass Hell on your trip to Lassen Natl Park.

After viewing the mud geyser at Sulphur Mine, we hiked the trail to the Bumpass Hell thermal area. The hike took about 30 minutes one-way on a trail with beautiful views across Lassen Park. Bumpass Hell is a thermal area much like those found in Yellowstone Park in Wyoming. There are boardwalks around the area for viewing the various pools, small boiling springs, and other thermal features. A portion of one of the boardwalks was closed because the feature was falling in on itself and creating a danger to tourists. There were lots of hikers, too many for me, but I don't like crowds. It was difficult to get photos because there were so many people. I suggest getting to Bumpass Hell before 9:00 a.m. to avoid the crowds. The last 200 yards is down a fairly steep hill which you will to climb back up to return to the parking lot. Score 3.

1.5 miles, mostly downhill to get to the vents. Very unique and interesting, one of the features that signifies the park. Yes, you can smell it but the stink isn't horrible. Recommend to do it as early as possible because hiking uphill after your visit in the heat of the day is not fun. Should be within the abilities of all able bodied adults and most school aged children. Views in the beginning of the hike are beautiful as well.

This place is unique! Boiling mud and steaming hills. The trail to get there is clean and moderately easy/hard towards the last part b4 the destination. Otherwise great place!
